I have a pony with a long coat, he is getting caked in mud at the minute in sensitive areas (between back legs, not sure how *roll eyes* behind front legs, where girth on older horse would go, etc) The mud is buried quite deep in and is proving a problem to remove, with him being so young he doesn't stand for long periods and i don't want him to have bad experiences with being groomed. So I am wondering what to do to get rid of the mud, I have got the top lot off and a lot of the deeper stuff but is there anything I can do that means he wont be standing for hours whilst I do it?

He could be like my old lad.... he used to sit up when he was having a roll or getting up - it was quiet funny really,

Is the mud cacked on? so its dry or is it wet? and is he in at night or living out ?

I would just do a little bit every day -if it were dry or use a plastic curry comb- carefully !

If its wet mud and its a nice bright warm day - and no sign of a chilly wind then i would carefully wash a small area too. Just becarful with a youngster they sometimes get a bit silly with water.... so dont just shove a hose pipe on the area... warm water would be nicer too and start at the front end..... and be ready to be a bit fleet off foot - dont just get shoving a hose on him - a. its not very nice in the cold and b. build him gentley to the sensation i.e. put it on his hoof and then move up the leg - but please do not do this if its going to drop cold - it would also be best to do this in a morning.

Once you get him clean you can then use one of the anti mud products that promise to keep "mud away".

Else when he moults he should loose the hair and the mud - the only concern i would have is if his skin is sore at all and then I would treat differently.

His skin seems ok, I have been checking to the best I can, I wont wash him yet as we keep getting fog so air too damp, ill just keep working with him, thankfully he is a very sweet boy and doesnt mind my messing too much, once the mud is off he will be dowsed in every anti mud product i can find lol
