long lining-anyone do it|?

justa nosely question really
i prefere to long line than lunge(my mare is very anughty on the lunge but much better with long lines!)
was just wondering who did it
what sort of horse and work the horse was doing?
and what exercises everyone with long lines and for how long/times per week?

Yep, I do it with my green 6 year old after my instructor advised me to do so as that is what she had been doing when he was with her for schooling.
He's a nappy bu**er so it has taught him to be brave although I haven't taken him out on the road as we have single track roads that get quite busy.
I take him in the school and do lots of bending, great for doing serpentines with

Have you tried lungeing with two reins?
So when you long line stick her on a circle and come into the middle.

Used it to break in a pony and bring an ex-racer back into work. It's great! Did schooling work, as the_stropster says, then eventually progressed to tracks then roads (quiet ones of course!). Use it now and again if we need to do a bit of spook busting, or can't ride for whatever reason. Much prefer it to lungeing. In fact if you have good hands you can do more or less whatever you like - so long as you can keep up! Great for keeping fit too.

I don't tend to lunge with a single line anymore (only to warm up) as I find it easier to get a horse working properly with two lines and you don't have to stop to change direction. I do figures of eight and serpentines as well as circles etc and pole work - takes a lot of energy though!

hi-jack am sorry!! i have a 3yold who i think wud benefit from this as is large and gangly n constant circles not good for him ect, my only prob is this chap has been unable to b bitted due to a molar tooth prob and is in a head collar(bless) can i long rein in head collar?? hes v polite in headcollar but dont want to confuse him?? (prefer headcollar 2 lunge cav due to weight) ne one??

How long are your lines? Mine differ in length and I find the shorter one isn't long enough to enable me to lunge with.

Long-lining is fab! Am looking to learn how to progress from just the simple circle and serpentine stuff to doing some of the more technical stuff....Tanya Larrigan style...so to find a classical instructor.....
