My mare who ive had for a 3 months or so has had a personality transplant since i baught her!!
she has always been forward going but fun and was lovely to jump etc. Then all of a sudden about 3-4 weeks after buying her she turned into a spooky night mare. she started bucking when you asked her to canter and then spooking and being silly and wound up!
food/routine/tack all the same and old owners deniying knowledge!!! she was not vetted stupidly but was super for the first month!
She came into season thats when it first started, the vet scanned her and said she was transitional ie coming in or out of season and that it could be the season and it could be worse as its the first season of the year.
Then she came out of season and not much change, she kicks the stable door, calls out, bargy to lead and still bucks/spooks when ridden.
vet came out again today and pointed out a few things to me
she came up lame on both fronts after flexion but not before.
she has a pneumo-vagina (air sucking!) of which he has today stitched up for me so she doesnt take as much air in. she has had her back etc etc checked all fine. he watched her lunge and then me ride her and for the first time didnt bronk-typical!!!!!
Im at a loss as she was wonderful and now quite a handful, advise please!!!

Might be taking her a while to come out of season.
Might be the pneumovagina which will now be fixed hopefully.
Might be that you've let her get away with bad behaviour during her season so shes carrying on with it.
Might be that now shes more settled with you she's testing boundaries!

You have had her for 3 months,so when you bought her it was the middle of winter. Maybe you are doing less work now, and she is settled and feeling very full of herself. It is spring and the grass has really got going. More work required/less feed? Try stopping all feed expect grass.

Agree with this. I think you need to persevere with her and maybe have some lessons on getting her listening, doing some groundwork etc

Sorry I cant be more positive but this happened to me 2 years ago. Bought what I thought was a quiet happy hacker (that is how she was described in her advert) in March. Got her home and for the first month she was perfect, then she came into season and Wham! turned into a complete witch. I checked all the usual possible problem areas but came to the conclusion that she was just a really moody mare, not just moody but quite dangerous (rearing etc) As all I wanted was a quiet hack and something I could enjoy being around I sent her back to the dealer and managed to get my money back, they had advertised her as being a complete saint and she definitely wasnt! I now have a gelding and am afraid after that experience I wouldnt have another mare. I hope you manage to get to the bottom of it.
