Long or short mane one cob x Connemara?

I would like my cob x Connie to stay looking like a lightweight cob if poss. Do you think a long mane helps soften a short, thick neck, or do they make the horse look more cob like overall? I don’t want to hog him, but trying to decide if a long mane would suit him better than his current short mane.
