How do you manage to canter whilst long reining? I have had some success long reining George in walk and trot and so far we have managed circles, straight lines and figure of 8's. As yet I haven't cantered him as I am concerned that I won't be able to keep up with him, as even on a circle you still need to walk about a fair bit. George is not capable at the moment of cantering anything less than a 20m circle and I really don't want to end up face down in the dirt!

Personally I don't - my fat short legs don't go that fast. If I ever do ask for canter, I long rein at a trot, then step to the side and then do one 20 m circle in canter with me jogging on an inner circle and then ask him to trot again - that is the most I can do with out ending up in a puffing heap.

Having watched vicijp's recent vid on long reining I have now mastered changing the rein at trot, and am now doing serps and figures of 8 - for as long as I can run - she is the one to ask about this subject.

its not difficult, just longrein on a circle, as if you were lunging, if you have mastered the trot and simple changes of rein you will find it easy, you shouldnt have to do to much running!

What would be the benefit of longreining in canter as opposed to longreining in trot or lunging with two reins in canter?

It's not something I know a huge amount about, have only used longreining in walk/trot to either give horses confidence out in front or for something a bit more interesting than leading in hand for horse recovering from injury.

I don't long rein behind - I only longrein Ty in a circle so canter is easy! only used it to teach him to work long and low....

I do it for the same reason as ParkRanger, if I just lunge he looks like your average donkey, but when long reining on a circle he starts to show promise, but even on a circle you still have to walk/run a fair bit. Will try tomorrow & report back.

Thanks vicijp for the vids - v helpful.

Yes still a fair amount of puff and hard work involved but worth it!

You will need some long lunge reins. The standard ones make the circle to small to canter on a circle using 2.
If you have to run whilst lungeing on a circle at walk and trot, id say he is far from ready for cantering on 2 reins.
