I have been lunging my boy as can't ride for a couple of weeks, also taking him out for walks on our usual hacking routes. I have been thinking about trying long reining. Could you anyone give me some tips on this? At the mo I lunge through the bit (don't have a cavesson) for long reining I would do the same I guess with two lunge ropes. But what exercises would be interesting to do with him? Thanks

Personally I would get someone out to show you how to do it if you have never done it before, start in a small controlled area and make sure the horse can cope with the lines around his legs before you move onto a bigger area. Your position plays a big part in longreining which is why it is better to be shown. You can do loads, including teaching dressage from the ground, work on a circle as when lunging or 'driving' if you take the horse out on 'hacks'. I love it, much prefer it to lunging when working on a circle too as it isn't as one sided, if that makes sense.
