Is it possible ? I don't think F's saddle fits him properly so his owner is getting the fitter out but in the meantime is it possible to long rein without a saddle or roller ? I have a roller but I don't think it fits properly and even though it fits round him it just doesn't look 'right'.

I use a roller, I have a kieffer one which I love but wasn't cheap, but you can pick up a nice shires one for £15 that'll be fine. THe hardest part is getting the roller in the right place and I find ones that have big blocks that go eiher side of the spine often don't sit right. The keiffer one has very small, very squishy blocks and the shires one doens't have blocks. Not sure if any of that is helpful but hope it is!

You do need something to hold the reins up- even if it is surcingle and rope- it goes too wrong too quickly without. You could just work him inhand without anything? Hold the closest rein and have the other one coming over the withers? I expect the roller would be fine though- it's not putting any weight on him if it's not done tight.

I put an elastic surcingle on my Shetland and thread the lunge rein through it. It's not perfect because eventually the lunge rein slips down so too low and then in danger of getting the rope caught up in his hind legs. He wouldn't mind, but I constantly yank the rope up.

A proper roller would be better with fixed rings around it.

Don't forget that which ever roller/surcingle you use that you should use a breastplate with it even if it's only a lead rope tied from side to side (that can't slip down) because if the roller slips backwards then you could be in for some shenanigans!

Thanks for that, We have shenanigans anyway, think pepsi bottle is going to eat him but when we hacked past a firework display (inadvertadly) he didn't bat an eyelid.
