6 weeks ago Molly was shod on Saturday and immediately went lame on her off fore, farrier was due to come the next day but she went sound again so we put it down to tight shoe. 2 weeks later she was lame again but on the other foot

Vet college came out, we lunged her, he did a flexion test all showed lameness on that foot and said he thought the problem was in coffin joint tissue as there was swelling above the coronet band. We then had two weeks on bute twice a day but she was still turned out. After 13 days (still on bute) she went really lame, I brought her in and her leg had swelled to below the knee

. Rang vet and on his advice cold hosed, bandaged and put her on box rest. The next day he came out and examined the leg and said he was very worried about the swelling and wanted to x-ray, started clipping her foot and found a big abscess on her heel which he burst

We then had to poultice for 5 days with magnesium sulphate, she was kept on box rest on danilon with an hour in a small paddock each day (which she hated!). We then were able to turn out again and after 10 days lunge to see if she was still lame on a circle, which she was but only very slight and worse on the right rein. So I rang him this am and she's to have danilon again, then 2 days without it and lunge again. The vet says it would be too much of a conincidence that she had the joint inflammation and an abscess but is confused why she was lame on flexion, if anyone has any ideas or opionions they would be very welcome - we just want to get her right

My immediate thought is that the shoeing has pricked something and introduced infection. I think its too much of a coincidence that you had a lame horse directly after shoeing and then found an abcess a couple of weeks later. The inflamation in the leg and above the coronet band could well be caused by this infection too.

Has he xrayed?

We were just plugging the extension lead in for x-rays when he found the abscess so he didn't x-ray as he hoped this was the cause. However vet said this am to try danilon again for a few days, then lunge and if no improvement x-raying would be the next step.
