Long term use of danilon

My horse has now been on danilon for several years with no adverse affect. I recently contacted my vet.for a prescription and was told that they had to come out to check him before issuing a prescription. This has never happened before. He said that it was a legal requirement. Is this true or is it just to get more money off me?

I have a feeling they are supposed to review annually / every 6 months or something.

They are supposed to check the horse before issuing a prescription for any drugs, most vets will do it annually if they know the horse well and you can tie it in with another visit to keep costs down, it is basically a box ticking exercise but it is a legal requirement now.

Yes if they have not seen the horse for the last twelve months I believe, they have to come out and check that the horse is still alive and still requires the drugs as they are classed as POMs (prescription only medication.)

I get my Danilon in six month batches as vet has to come out every six months to re-assess.

Yes they do need to see a horse every 6 months. Legally and also it may be that the doseage needs upping or downing now and again too.
