My Dawn, the grey has a long very thick mane and her neck seems hot (though they do have a shelter which they love in the heat). I don't want to pull it at the moment, so this morning after a citronella bath, I tied them it into a few loose long plaits and bunches to keep it off her neck. I've taken them out now as I'm not sure if I should leave overnight, but it did seem to make her a bit cooler. Any thoughts? Thanks

I always do a running plait in my fell in hot weather, makes him so much more comfortable. Mine does get absolutely roasting under his!

When it's excessively hot, I do a fairly loose Spanish plait and leave it overnight. It's really quick to redo the next morning, just using my fingers instead of a comb.

Before I cut it short a few weeks ago, my horse's mane was always in loose braids. Protected the hair and helped in the heat. I'm letting it grow out again, but I'll admit his current short style is much more simple and less work. So I've had no problem with braids left in.

Oh thanks, I'll do bunches and loose plaits again tomorrow to keep her cool (She's 20). She did seem happy and spent more time outdoors today instead of lingering in her shelter.

Our welsh sec A had an exceptionally long mane. In hot weather I did it in a loose spanish plait. He was far more comfortable. I wouldn't do anything tight at the roots but a loose braid is fine. For that matter I have waist length hair - I do that in a spanish plait in the hot weather too!

I do a running plait on the Hipo and Shetland if they are getting too hot, I tend to take it out overnight as its cooler but wouldn't have a problem leaving it in either :)

I always used a running plait in my cob. It could stay in for a few days if done loosely enough. Kept the horse much happier.
