Hi ive been a lurker for a few months now as I didn't really have anything exciting or interesting about to post, I don't compete and just do a bit of hacking and clinics. But now need some help please!
This is my first horse ive had on DIY livery of a few years. I was recommend by someone to the yard but didn't know anyone when I moved my horse there about a year ago, ive made a few friends but its not a particularly friendly yard but its convenient and my horse has been happy.
Ive now made friends through my riding club and have found a nearer yard to home with some people who are in my riding club so I want to move there. My current yard owner is a bit of a problem it has turned out, an older farmer who just has horses on the side, main business is farming and he isn't interested in the yard just takes the money each month and lets us get on with our horses.
However he says I haven't paid my last bill- I pay by chq so that I can track it in the bank rather than cash, I can see that it went through tho? I don't want to give my notice, (although I don't have a contract so how much would I have to give?) and him think its cos of this problem and things end badly. If it didn't work out at the new yard I wouldn't want to not be able come back?

Show him your bank statement showing the cheque has been cashed.

Give him a months notice, and tell him how much you've enjoyed being at the yard. And hope that you'd be welcome back if the need arose.

First of all you need to show him the proof that you have paid (bank statement) so that he can't accuse you of leaving without paying. Then to be honest I would ask him how much notice he requires before you leave and go from there. Personally I don't have a written contract at my yard, but to be courteous I would offer a months notice and if I were to leave before that pay up to the end of the months notice. We pay in advance anyway at out yard and any extras that we have had added at the end of the month.

This. Never leave on a bad note, if you can help it - the horse community is frighteningly small, and prone to bouts of gossip :D

I agree with above, have a chat with him about the 'unpaid' bill and sort that then give it a few days then give your notice.

Without a contract your notice is however frequently you pay, so if you pay monthly then a months notice should be given (if you pay weekly only a weeks notice needed)
If you want to move sooner then no harm in giving notice, paying your notice period then leaving whenever convenient - he won't care whether you are physically there or not as long as notice paid. For a few £100 in double livery you can get started at the new yard asap.
