Its v chilly here in south east still, no rain but frosty, our grass is ankle deep but will the grass have enough nutritional value for my filly? She does well on adlib hay at night and suregrow balancer x2 day and out all day. Cannot put hay in field. Should I wait a month for it to become warmer or see how she goes?

My two yearlings have been out all winter without rugs and have done really well. I did not want to confine them being youngsters, I like them to have the freedom. However I do bring them in each day for a feed and to check them over etc. However I do put some hay out, which they are now eating as there is no very much grass at present.

Before Christmas when I let them into a paddock for the winter that had not been grazed they did not want any hay at all and put weight on.

You could wait for the current cold spell to end and try and see how she goes, provided you check her every day, you would be able to tell if if was not right for her. Presume there is good shelter in the field so the filly can get out of the wind? You do get spring a lot earlier in south than us.

My first spring at new yard but they start grazing early as it tends to get too lush. I think I heard it needs to get 7 degrees plus for new grass to come through. There are high hedges as windbreak but no roofed shelter as such. I guess I'll play it by ear, I don't want to go adding hard feed as she's v young and high energy already!

Personally I would not want to stop feeding the Suregrow even if she is out 24/7 at that age as she needs the nutrients it gives her. Nothing against her being out, mine would be if our land was suitable but I would carry on feeding the Suregrow even if you stop the hay she is used to at night.
