Any ideas? Had the dreaded phone call to say horse was completely lame on Xmas day, but I have been abroad for xmas, cant see him - he has great care though, but its hard to make decisions when i am not there! Yard got vet and thankfully it was only an absess but the yard are still don't want to turn horse out - this seems a really long time, he had 5 days of wet polticing and has been on dry poltices since, with no discharge, just a little smelly. Horse hates to be in so I don't like the fact he has been in now for 10 days when he normally lives out all year - he is sound now - would you turn out? (im probably going to stick with the yards opinion since they are the professionals) What's the longest you have had to treat for an abscess?

4 months for one of mine:eek: but he did not drain or come properly sound during that time and had other issues, your horse sounds so much easier, I would usually expect them to be able to go out once they are no longer draining.
He could be turned out with the hoof covered well so that it stays clean until the hole closes up, I stick some cotton wool in then cover and duct tape, movement will help drain any pus left as long as it is kept clean.

I have always been 'lucky' with abscesses, and have found they have cleared up within a week to a fortnight.

Maybe the yard is concerned about turning him out due to all the wet and mud, therefore possibly reintroducing infection?

Im treating an abcess on my big lad just now and he's been out every day. The movement helps to push the pus out , i personally wouldnt keep in for an abcess

I have been treating my lad's abscess for 6 weeks now. Just as he becomes sound, I put him out with a hoof boot for a week but then as soon as I put him out without the boot the abscess flares up again. This time I shall keep the boot on for a few weeks!

depends where abscess is. if its deep and keeps reoccuring like my yearlings is doing your horse may need more work on the foot. my yearling has a deep abscess and has had to have alot of hoof wall cut away. shes going to be sedated and xrayed to see if we need more foot cut away and then its plastic shoe and filler to balance foot out again. i thought this was pretty drastic until farrier said it was the best thing to do to prevent future problems.

Once sound turn him out. Dolly has had a few this winter. One was about a month. It was the wet fields for her so I have moved her fields which has helped and she has been clear since in new field

Mine took a couple of months. It was very slow to drain. Once he was sound and there was a lot less pus I turned him out in a hoof boot. As long as you can keep it clean it is better for them to be out and moving around.

4 months for delicia. It was her last one but caused a lot of damage. No matter what we did we couldn't get to the pus pocket before it exploded out of the top and bottom of the hoof. Tool a further two months for her hoof to heal.

Thanks all, I think he is out of the woods now, has been turned out for 2 days and all seems well :) I feel very lucky now I hear stories about 4 months - my sympathies are with ye
