Looking at ads for horses for sale

I haven't looked at ads for ages but have started having a nose recently.... when i was last looking for horses (nearly 4 years ago I think), an "all rounder" was something that had actually done a bit of everything, had done some SJing, some XC, had usually hunted, got some good placings in dressage, was relatively sensible to hack etc.

Now an "all rounder" seems to be something that is 4yo, has popped a X pole, has seen hounds, and done a few weeks of schooling.....has the world gone mad in 4 years? Every advert seems to sell "potential" for silly prices

I don't want potential, I want a genuine horse that is an all rounder. Something that can do a bit of everything but not a world beater..

Am I missing something

I am sick and tired of "potential" horses, FFS, every horse has potential, it does not mean they are worth 5 figures!!!
 
I dont want to buy something that's clearly on a dealer's yard based on its "potential"... I keep seeing ads for horses who are 12 and have BE "potential"...is that like advertising Rhyn as "show potential" because his dad was a champion D? Despite the fact that he's 11 and I've entered one showing class with him 3 years ago, surely I could whack another 1K on just because of who his dad was???
 
Yep that seems to be the way - "Bred to jump", I mean come ON, just because a horse shares a sire of an Olympic medallist it does NOT mean it is going to be any good! Logic says if you look at the top 20 horses on the FEI list they do not all have the same prolific sire, or even share a couple, they are a mismatch of breeding! Clearly you could advertise Rhyn as "HOYS potential" - after all his daddy is a champ

his dad was a champion, his grand sire on mum's side was too, clearly he's just not had the right rider/opportunities etc to make him into a champion as well.

I just want people to be realistic! I have been nothing but honest with the people who've been to see Rhyn TBH, I don't get anything out of being economical with the truth apart from my pony gettting sent back 2 months into the loan when he doesn't do what I claimed he had "potential" for!
 
yep ditto my thoughts! - dont care about breeding, I dont care how it looks, I want proven ability only results! - otherwise they can stick their 4-10k allrounders!!

Cannot believe people are silly enough to push the prices up like this by buying them!

Friend has just got a mare that has done a few bits and bobs, nothing remarkable, nothing special, for 7.5k!! madness!
 
It's bonkers. Nearly 4 years ago my friend bought a genuine all rounder (done a bit of BSJA, loads of XC/HT, loads of dressage to Novice, hacks out, etc etc) for 4.5K....now that sort of horse is about 9K!!

Oh, and he's coloured as well so surely that pushes the price up about another 1.5K?

i'm going to start advertising Rhyn as "HOYS potential" despite the fact he's 11 and see what happens!

No not for sale!! He's for loan and I am hopefully having that mare...it started off as looking at what else is out there for loan, then I thought I would look at what's for sale, and hence this post started!

I would sell if he went to a home he was happy in and they offered me the right money, but he's not *for sale* if you see what I mean.
 
I think it depends on where you look as well for sale. I think H+H tends to attract the overpriced ones. I have a 10yp 16.3 tb x id, gelding. Done small bit of everything with me, I could write that he has BE potential down to height and breeding, but there is no way he does, and stick him in there for £5/6k!

If he stays up for loan much longer I'm going to give in and say blooming well send him to me so I can have something to hunt this winter....

LOL! I potentially have someone for him, or at least I have someone I would happily send him to if no one better comes along in the meantime! I have a HHOer coming to see him tomorrow, another family on friday, and then a hunting family who just sound perfect on sat (mum and dad hunt every sat, dad works for the hunt, their 11yo boy has outgrown his 13.2hh and they want something for him to hunt in winter and PC in summer - I know they'd send him back after a couple of years or so but he'd have a hell of a horsey CV after a couple of years with them! plus shouldnt be too hard to re-loan or sell after that if he can prove he's safe for a child to hunt and PC...I hope!!!).

He's only been up a week and a bit properly, had so many calls that I get fed up of answering the phone!
