As the title really, I am looking at stronger bits after my horse bolted off with me the other day. Have been looking at getting a stronger bit, for hacking and possibly for dressage and jumping. For those not up on the story so far my horse tends to tank off after each jump and then bolted on a hack. Dressage tends to be ok. So have been searching the internet as don't want anything too strong as may be to much of shock? Was looking at a Pelham maybe with an elasticated curb chain. What are your thoughts on this? I believe if its elasticated you can use it for jumping and with one set of reins. Any other ideas on bits, quite strong when needed but not harsh and dangerous in the wrong hands!!!

Ears forward, locked on the bit and just went. I had no brakes and no control!!!! I put a thread about it on Friday. He is also very strong and tends to take off after each jump on a course!!! Thats land, bum fly up, then body stretch out and tank off like looney!! Can just circle him round in the ring, but on a hack not the same. Also it was a lot lot faster!!

I can sympathise with you my mare has started tanking off in company with her nose in the air and neck fixed. I've been suggested a standing martingale (not sure about jumping in that tho ). Someone also suggested a Waterford bit?

I was suggested a running martingale, as you can jump with that, but I don;t think you can with a standing. The Waterford bit was also suggested but I looked it up and didn't like the sound of it, too harsh. I am thinking of a pelham with elasticated chain for jumping and the metal chain for hacking. Or a spanish bit or Kimblewick. There are just so many its so hard to choose!!

A waterford like any bit is only harsh if used with strong hands.

My mare loves hers and goes better in that than her KK Sprenger kind bit (which when the mood takes she grabs and tanked off with me). I no lionger have her leaning on me AND if she should feel leary I have the option of a short sharp reminder (not often given I hasten to add) and I feel much happier knowing I have the extra "brakes" if required.

Any bit can be severve in the wrong hands! I used to ride my loan horse in a waterford pelham as he had a habit of grabbing the bit and running off with me - the loose link means they can't grab it so well to tank off. Try a martingale first it might help, you could always speak to one of the bit bank people and get their advice and loan one for a whiel before commiting to it :)

Try a bit bank - they will give you guidance on which bits to try - you give them a go and if they don't work or you don't like them you send them back ! Simples

Some bits have an upward action some down some apply poll pressure some apply tongue pressure etc - you might end up with an expenssive bit that looks much like your own but really does the trick and never need to buy another one again!!

I know people are agianst them but try a flash - if your aids are being completely ignored then they must some how be being avaided ....as I am guessing you tried pulling and sitting deep :-) Opening the mouth is trick number 1 !

Obviously the norm teeth back saddle checks too !

I sympathise its frightening having no control
