Hi Im looking for some recommendations I have a new horse who is quite strong (Warmblood type) she has previously been in a pelham with old owner but is in a snaffle atm for flat, she needs to have a flash type nose band because she likes to open her mouth and put her tongue over the bit 🫣 She's currently in a low drop noseband so I know that wouldn't be suitable with the pelham But im just looking for any bridle and bit ideas that could be similar and work? Thanks

If she's putting her tongue over the bit she's almost certainly trying to avoid discomfort. A flash might deal with the symptom but not the cause so I'd get your bit sorted first. My old boy did this when I first had him. He had a huge tongue and lips and had very little room in his mouth. He hated anything with a single or double joint. It took a lot of trial and error but eventually we settled on a mullen mouth hanging cheek snaffle (it sits very still in the mouth which he seemed to like) for flat work and gentle hacking and a three ring waterford gag for exciting stuff (jumping, beach rides and fun rides). He was also exceptionally strong so I needed brakes. A lot of people will say that a waterford is a horrible bit but it was the only 'strong' bit he never complained about or fought against. I had control in it with the slightest pull so didn't have to keep hold of it all the time like I did with others so we were both way more relaxed with him in it.

The other thing I felt helped was a Micklem bridle. My trainer has a theory that the anatomical claims they make aren't that big a deal but that they are very good at holding the bit very still in the mouth so if your horse likes that it can make a big difference to them. This definitely seemed to be the case for Archie. I would sort your bit first though and then try a different bridle.
