Looking for a medium upwards dog. Want something that can live outside most of the year so it'd have to have a decent coat. Something that can come hacking with me and foxy.
Really want a friendly dog that gets on with my dogs and cat, but lets us know when theres someone outside. Ideally something that you'd look at and think 'actually, I think I won't go on the rob at that house...'

Was thinking about a Doberman but I can't imagine they'd be suited to being outside?
Would a Rough Collie or a Border Collie be suited?

Thinking about getting it as a puppy and then slowly introducing it to live outside over next summer!
Can't think what breed would be ideal

Staffies are a big big no, my mum got bit by one a few years ago and just can't be around them anymore! Same also goes for GSD and Yorkshire Terriers (not that Yorkies would be suitable :D)

Would also consider a rescue dog if we found the right one for us!
Help :D

Was going to say GSD but they are off the list, boooo!!

Some rescues are a bit funny with dogs living outside/being yard dogs but others might be more flexible. You could also look at a private rehome but obviously something cat and dog safe.

GSD would be perfect for it wouldn't they :(

I had a feeling that be the case.. I wonder why though!? A dogs much better off with a cosy kennel in the tackroom and the freedom to run the field than they are in a cage at their rescue centre.. Actually I'd say its the ideal life for a dog! If my dogs had the coats to be outside then they would be! :o

English Springer Spaniel, a friend of mine has his living out all year round in a shed no problem, they will run and keep up with your horse all day! Lovely natured and very intelligent so easy to train. Great dogs to have.

I had a feeling that would be the case with dobermans :( I've always wanted one though, lovely lovely dogs! Hmm I do like lurchers, never thought about it, I'll have a look into whats available I think :D

Oooooh English Springer Spaniels, I do like them.. Would one of them growling and barking at you be scary enough to make you think twice?

Elsiecat, that is a WHOLE other debate and I agree....

I'd be looking at something wire-haired and not too much maintenance involved.

Haha! Hmmm I'm going to have a good scour of the internet tonight for dogs for rescue etc.
Bit begrudged to look at the RSPCA though, they're pains in the a$$ and I'd rather support a smaller charity I think

Large Munsterlander? Or one of the Belgian Sheperd dog types? Giant Schnauzer? I don't know if they'd be suitable but was just thinking of big breeds with thicker coats who look a bit scarier than a BT...;)

You could try Many Tears they are a dog rescue centre based in West Wales but have dogs all over the country in foster care. I am very biased towards spaniels they really do make great companions for you and the horse.

The first two look nice on google images :D Not into any size schnauzers, ugly ugly dogs (no offence to any owners!!! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder:D)

I think I've heard of that place actually.. I'll have a google of it tonight and see whats about!

I found some perfect bloodhound x sheepdog puppies last night, only wanted a 55 pound donation, I thought PERFECT :D looked on google maps and it was 3 hours away! Forget how big Wales is :o

I do like Spaniels.. I have two cavs now! Only spaniels I can't warm to is Cocker Spaniels

Still playing with the idea of border collies, rough collies and maybe shetland sheepdogs though! Going to have a mega internet patrol tonight :D

I've got the perfect one for you then, a springer/ border collie cross, she is taller than a springer but has the springer nature and the collie intelligence. Fab cross and is good with all livestock. She plays chase with my miniature yearling, they take it in turns to chase each other so funny! Many Tears is based between Swansea and Carmarthen, about 70 miles from Cardiff, heading west but they have dogs all over the country if you go on their web site it says where the dogs are in the country, worth a look. Good luck.

Many tears are not one of the most well regarded "rescues". To much collaboration with puppy farms for my taste.
A sheltie would not fit your criteria. A border collie might and border collie rescue are swamped. You would not want the coat work a rough collie needs and smooth collies are scarcer.
Plenty of rescue springers -not impressive guards though. TBH the best dog would be a GSD but prejudices run deep. Could you not get a sable or black if the commoner black & gold gives bad memories?
A bloodhound cross may well follow it's nose.....and keep following.

Have a look at the Dogs Trust website-lots on there. Had a quick look-there's Jet,who's a lab cross, who was a working dog used to (&prefers) being kept outside. I agree,Springers not one of the first breeds that would spring(!) to mind as a guarder. (Lovely tho,had one when I was a teenager:)) Several GSDs on there too, some not as 'GSD looking'. Only way to know of course,is to meet it-I'm sure the right GSD will blow any previous feelings out the window:)

I have heard this about them too but they do deny it, haven't ever had a dog from them but knoe a few people who have and they have nothing but good opinions of the centre.

Not sure about that my cross is an amazing house dog and will protect our property at all times, not sure anybody would come through the gates that did not know her!

what about a retriever or a lab? both would be happy living outside. also we have a springer x and she certainly barks and would put people off coming in the house! i think though most dogs will put thieves off. when my parents lived in dublin we had 2 retrievers. the neighbours got burgled roughly 3 times in 3 years and we weren't touched. last time they forgot a note which marked out the houses on the street which had dogs. They bought a dog and as far as i know no more trouble with burglers!

What's the issue with a GSD? Is that due to previous bad experiences too? My sister just recently got a GSD x Rottie - he'd probably suit living out and definitely has the 'look' of a good guard dog (don't think he'd be any good in reality mind! Lol)

Yes! My mums managed to be on the recieving end of many p*ssed off dogs!
A GSDxRottie sounds like the worlds most capable guard dog!!
