So I find myself in the market for a new tow car, I have a B+E Licence, and will be towing an Ifor HB506 with one horse approx. 500kgs, would be nice to have the opportunity to take a friend, but not vitally important.

This will also be my everyday car for commuting to and from work, I do approx. 300 miles a week, so as economical as possible.

I like the look of the Kia Sorento, and also the Hyundai Santa Fe (not sure on the towing capacity), my head is spinning with all the different cars available, I do know however, that I don't want a Discovery or a Freelander.

Budget approx. 6-7k, preferably something this isn't massively high mileage.

Thanks :)

I'll always say Kia Sorento, I love mine. It's a 2004 model, you could get two for £7k. The Santa Fe is slightly lower tow capacity though it is essentially the same car in a different shell. Sorento 2.8 ton, Santa Fe 2.5 ton.

How do you find your Sorento, whats it like of fuel consumption and general running costs?

I did look at them before I bought my X Trail a few years ago, and wish I had bought one, as I have had various prolems with my X trail over the years, and have lost all faith in it now :(

For a big old bus, the fuel consumption is excellent. Around 35 per gallon and tows like there's nothing behind it.

If you do go and look at one, have a look at the inside of the rear doors. I've found the beginning of rust in there, which is covered by the plastic skirts so not noticeable on the outside. Don't buy one with a Save Our Lifeboats sticker in the window, it's probably been dipped in the sea.

Pretty good fuel then - thanks :)

Thank you for the tip, nothing worse than sea water to rust a car!

We have just bought a 2008 Kia Sorrento. Hubby loves it towed with the trailer for the first time yesterday and it made light work of it. Be careful with the newer ones as the towing capacity is less than the older models. It has all the mod cons. It costs about £80 to fill it up from empty and it does about 450/500 miles on a tank. I am using it to communte to work over an hour away at the moment and I am not finding it's costing me much more per week than my old fiesta. :)
