*cough* for a friend....

Child buys pony cheap from ex riding school, keeps it on grass patch by garage at home, pony keeps jumping out because its lonely, escapes one day to an amazing house with ponies and kids and they allow girl to keep pony there, (naturally....) pony becomes very good at show jumping, everyone lives happily ever after

Anyone know it by any chance please?

What decade?:p I picked up loads of old pony novels from a charity shop a few years ago when I was 10-12 and remember that plot, I think I can dig them up somewhere!

Patricia Leitch- jump to the top

That's it :D I'm 99.9% sure

They go hunting & the pony gallops into the hounds? She has a very rich/spoilt arch enemy?

ooh, I remember this one! She keeps it at home on the land for a garage and somehow ends up at a posh yard and going to HOYs Sadly I cant remember the blumming name! Pretty sure its not of the above though is it?

I still have the full set of My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead and Green grass of Wyoming which I got in the 1970's.

They take pride of place in my modest library (think bookshelves) and I have to confess that I still read them. Unfortunately my dad threw all my other horsey books out after I left home.

Think I am off for a wander round Amazon.

No it's not....I'm sure that's a Jinny book.

Jump to the Moon was Jinny - Jump to the Top was also by Leitch but featured a black pony called Flicker. I think she was meant to be a Fell pony crossed with something with blood. The riding school closed down and she bought her last minute from an auction. I think the girl was called Jacky. Sounds like this one to me - but I think quite a few pony books had a similar storyline! I remember the spoilt rival cutting her stirrup leathers at HOYS - and the hunting episode (which wouldn't of happened with Jinny who I don't think would have agreed with hunting!)

I still have quite a few of my old pony books - I wonder if I still have this one?!

It IS Jump to the Top by Patricia Leitch. Jacky munro, who buys Flicka from Miss henderson when the riding school shuts. Gets the pony at auction after winning money on her premium bond, buying it from under the nose of arch rivals, the Grunters. Struggles with keeping it at home on the garage patch, pony jumps out, is found by Erica and Roderick Dawson and they offer to keep her for jacky. Trials and tribulations of schooling a young pony, culminates in her being leading junior Jumper at HOYS in spite of celia grunter cutting her stirrup leather.

Patricia Leitch also wrote Dream of Fair horses, in which another girl discovers the grey mare, Perdita, at her neighbours, ends up riding it for him, in spite of arch rivals ( the old mans daughter and grand daughter) trying to stop it. Qualifies for HOYS, owner falls ill with heart attack, and girl ends up taking pony to HOYS and winning. Old man dies, leaving girl pony in his will. Much inner turmoil from girl due to family situation, she finally sells pony to rich Americans.

I love Dream of Fair Horses...still have a copy. Affected me greatly as a child..the last chapter still chokes me up.

As for the other, I thlnk I'm getting mixed up with a Jinny book...apologies :)

DOFH is probably my favourite Pony Book and one of the best written, insightful ones for sure. But the end drove me crackers when I was a kid - selling the pony, fine, but going off with the hippy boyfriend??! After all she'd learned from the old man? Ugh. Waste. :D :D

That's it exactly. Except my edition is called "Jacky Jumps to the Top". Not sure when the name changed but mine is a 70's copy.

I still have all my books - including the entire Black Stallion series, all the Jill books and various others. A collection from a pony starved child hood, that I can't bear to part with.
