Hi, I am currently in the process of retraining my ex racer and I thought it would be a cool idea to post my updates to a blog. I then realised how many other people have ex racers too and struggle with the schooling of them. I then decided to publish my blog and what I think works best with my boy in order to help others!

My blog is: http://myprojectaskari.blogspot.co.uk

Please check it out even if you don't have a racer! Any feedback would be great!

Thanks! :)

:)

Well done, all the right things going on.
He should not be bargy, I am most surprised at that, it is probably a nervous thing. Be consistent and set up little routines so he can relax. You may need to kind of ignore some things he does at the moment, but quickly move on to teaching him good things.
I would give him a magnesium calmer like Steady up from Feedmark for a month, then decide about tweaking his dietary minerals.
Use 100gm to 200gms of micronised linseed for conditioning without fizz.
Try a plain feed like Fast Fibre or non mol beet to carry minerals.
25gms salt.
no alfa no licks no molasses, soak haylage and hay to remove sugars.
Never start anything new when you are short of time.
I find 101 exercises books are really great, the jumping one has 25 flat exercises.

I had a look at his race record, you can view the races on racing post, in spite of good trainer and decent breeding he was never going to win a race, by the looks of things he was just too slow!
You can always ask john best if he has any tips, he will be glad to know he has a good home :)

Wow thanks for all the advice! I will admit, when I bought him I did not know he had raced! There is definitely a stigma with ex racers but from what I've seen of my boy it's nothing nasty! I'm gonna try those things in his feed because he is a tad bit sharp right now! It's nice to be able to access all this great info from you guys as I've never had an ex racer before and he is somewhat of a diva!

Thank you! xx

If he is sharp soak hay or haylage to remove sugars and keep him on ad lib forage, but add minerals as they will wash away.
I like horses who know they are divas , and if they don't know it already, I encourage them to put their best hoof forward .......... be the best!
