Im looking for a new horse due to my gorgeous boy being irreparably broken :-( . Having been looking around, although I'm open to alsorts i want a middleweight with good bone and have come to the conclusion i ought to have another Irish draught.
Would it be best to go to Ireland to look as anything that has done a bit of competing over here is either not for sale or huge money.
My boy was rising 5 when i got him (he is pure ID) and was to be my dream horse but i really don't want to go down the route of a complete baby again as I'm nearer 50 than 40 and feel like life is passing me by.
All ideas gratefully received

Plenty of nice ID's being bred in this country. definitely no need to go to Ireland. I think our breeding policy here is more robust than Ireland's. Anyway start by looking on the IDHS(GB) website in the sale section. Janet George of Indigo Irish Draughts usually has some nice types for sale, although they are usually youngsters backed and ridden away. If she doesn't have anything she will be able to point you in the direction of someone who has. Bowland Irish Draughts also worth a look. FB has an ID members page too. Good ridden ID's are harder to come by as people don't tend to sell them !

It will be cheaper in Ireland .
I bought my last one three years ago as a very green five year old he came from a UK dealer but was sourced not long before from Ireland .
He was half what English bred ones where costing .

But not necessarily better quality I'm afraid.

Plus by the time you factor in going to Ireland to view and then transport the horse back its probably not much of an advantage.

It will cost £300 to transport the horse back and Ryanair flights out are as cheap as chips! If you go to Ireland you will be able to look at lots of IDs ranging from the very sporty, to the chunky.

Don't dismiss a decent IDx. I got my boy last year as a rising 6yo and on first look at his advert I thought he was a bit fine for me. I went to look anyway as he was local and in reality he had much more bone.

He's now filling out and maturing and I don't think there's too much of anything else in him. His temperament is fantastic as he's so laid back and super safe as I too didn't want anything too feisty (def don't bounce anymore!)

My advice would be to go to a few dealers, eg Shane Walsh, and have a look and see if you can get the right stamp.

Good luck. They are out there!

Thanks Tamski, my present boy came from Shane Walsh. He was coming 5 and wasn't cheap as he has such good breeding. I don't really want another total baby
