Hi all,

I am looking for a new combo rug for my horse this winter, every year i lose half his mane and i know most do but i wondered if anyone had any ideas on a good rug that may stop this from happening? I was looking at the Premier Equine detachable neck rugs.. i have found the detachable ones to be better as the normal combos seem to bunch up when he lifts his head up and hence pull all his mane out.. any ideas would be much appreciated!! The PE neck covers look roomy and well fitted? His mane has only just grown back and looking nice again and its soon time to rug up again! :( I do also have a snuggy hood to try but i have heard mixed reviews on them pulling manes out..

Thanks in advance!

Weather beeta freestyle ! They have a wither pad which raises the rug off the neck and stops rubbing. They are a little pricier at around £100 + but well worth the money i say!!! They come in different styles as well, I'm going for the medium detach a neck one but they do combos and also there top rang one has a removable layer so you can rig according to weather with just one rug. If you buy the 2012 one you get £100 off on eBay. Definitely worth a looksy !! X

All of mine have PE detachable neck rugs from rainsheets - 100gs (+liners) so essentially whenever they need a rug they are in a PE. I've had no problems on any with mane rubbing out- aside from one rubbing mane when unrugged in stable! I also have one 200g combo neck PE and that hasn't rubbed mane out on that horse either. Hope that helps :).

Brilliant thank you both of you, I do have the weatherbeeta free style, hes had it for two or three winters now but i found that the neck cover folds up when he puts his head down in the detachable when its windy and the rain then got in the gap, other than that his mane was fine in those. Think i may try a PE, have heard alot of positive things!

I think you'll struggle to find something if you want to use neck covers day and night. I've sorted it with my chap though.......he wears a Rambo duo in the field in the day and then wears normal stable rugs at night (no neck cover - and is fully clipped, and is quite a chilly horse normally). Last winter was the first that we had a full head of hair, and he wasn't cold without the neck cover!!

Mine lives all winter in her JHL/Mark Todd Heavy weights with the extra gusset over the wither and it has never rubbed her mane out! i always look forward to winter because mine has SI so winter is the time when it grows back!

ETA she also has a Shires Tempest which is a size to big but that doesnt rub anthing out either

another vote for PE

I have a spaniard with a long mane and his mane was still lovely and full after the winter although he doesn't wear the neck cover every day, only when it's really cold

Thanks again all, I do try to leave it as long as possible before he has his full neck rugs on but he is fully clipped and i don't like him to get cold plus it means his coat will keep growing in.. :( he has high whithers so i'm guessing this contributes to it as the rug collects on his neck, the detachables are far better than the built in combos and last year i managed to keep it for longer than i ever have done before by keeping him in the detachable neck rugs. I am still keen on the PE rugs so am waiting for a 20% offer day to come up so i can buy one and give it a go

I find my traddie cob seems to fit FAL rugs. He has the ones with the detachable neck covers, from 40g up to 350g but at this time of year before he's been clipped he also has a cheap Shires combo rainsheet, so I think it really depends on the fit of the rug and the shape of the horse!
Copious amounts of "mane and tail" on his mane seems to help as well!

The other thing is to keep the neck covers clean and grease free, as dirty ones really don't help! I also spray the inside of the neck cover, and his mane, with mane and tail spray - which is a bit of a nightmare when I have to plait, but it does help.

I wouldn't worry too much about him getting cold without a neck cover on in the stable, if he's got enough rugs on his neck being exposed shouldn't make any difference?

I love Pe rugs, previously had GFS rugs which were awful for manes.ne cover on Re rugs are huge, never had a problem with sny loss of mane. I use the buster trio which is amazing:-)

I think a horse getting overheated is one of the reasons for mane loss. Last year I used Turn Out rugs in and out had a lighter weight neck than rug and hey presto, she still had a mane at the end of winter :)

Some great suggestions i really appreciate it everyone. i will defo try the not using a neck rug in the stable and i do usually spray copious amounts of mane and tail conditioner on to try and help so will carry on with that..my horse has a thin mane as it is so doesn't take much for it to be tugged out.. im forever looking at my mums horse envious of his bushy thelwell mane! lol. His amigo rugs do fit him really well but i am thinking about purchasing a new PE full neck for this year..
