Hi, I have a lovely 15.1hh sport horse just turned 6 who hasn't had the best start to life being passed around and someone trying to back him as a two year old in a very unforgiving way. I bought him as a three year old but his past owner told me he was five, I knew he was younger as soon as I looked at him. he has now proven himself and is a very talented little chap been out jumping british novice getting double clears never had a problem always very safe and sound loves his work but around 8 months ago started to have issues, it started as refusing to have the bridle on (that’s fixed) both his ears were blocked with wax, because of this he was out of work for about 3 or 4 months and ever since he’s a different horse! He’s lovely to handle but I Can Not get on him. Every time I put my foot in the stirrup he tenses up and runs, it takes about 40 minutes to get on him on a good day. And if I do get on him that’s only half the battle! The slightest move once on him even lifting my hand off my rein to itch my face sets him off in blind panic with his head in the air and bum to the floor! Same as if I ask for trot. I have owned cold backed horses in the past and I really do not think he’s cold backed because I could spend 1hour solid of walking and then ask for trot and he would still do this panic running strange thing. He has been checked for everything inside and out! The vets can’t find anything I’ve had chiropractors, saddle fitters, dentists he is 110% Sound! I really do think its all in his head remembering pain and past experiences and I don’t really know what to do or who to turn to !
people have told me to send him away to someone to fix but he gets so easily upset and I cant really afford it so that’s my last option but I was told to consider a horse whisperer. I’ve spent hours on google searching 'horse whisperers in the west midlands' I didn’t get much information other than a lot of websites telling me about the film horse whisperer lol.. Does anyone know of any good whisperers in the midlands (Tamworth area) and would they say that’s the right way to go about fixing my horse?

Sorry to hear you are having such problems. I had Sue Palmer out to my horse, as a three year old, and I only have praise for her. She is amazing and will help both you and your horse.

thats good to hear she helped you with your horse, just put's you off when you hear bad things about people but i might consider her because she isnt far away from me and anythings worth a go i suppose ! thanks a lot for your comment x

Cooper Wilson is in Yorkshire, is a reiki healer and animal communicator. Not local to you I know, but well worth a chat with him. Never heard anything negative from people who he has helped, amazing guy.

John Jones is not a horse "whisperer" but a "listener" and is brilliant with horses...

He has helped many an EMW rescue equine ;)

or

you could come at the issues from another angle, change your approach completely and use clicker training ..... that can really change animals attitude and motivation ;)

I hope you can find a solution, he does sound unhappy with the ridden side of things :(

You don't need a horse whisperer!! You need someone who will find the pain issue your horse almost certainly has! A VERY good physio would be my first port of call - and there is NO better than Tim Bradford - http://bradfordsvetphysio.co.uk/

hey thanks for your response, but my horse has had lazier treatment and lots of other different types of therapy by my chiropractor alison reddy, I’ve spent around £3000 this year alone with vet bills ect and as i said he is 110% sound he has been ridden normally (It was once just the getting on we had issues with) and he has been out once jumping since coming back into work fine but past how many months its ridden work as well he just panics i cannot look over my shoulder without running in blind panic. all these signs are sending me more its in his head than him feeling pain, anything’s worth a go and if this fails then i will probably go back to looking if it is physical issues but at this moment in time im going with remembered pain, but i will bare your suggestion in mind :) thanks

Sue is also a physiotherapist as well as a Kelly Marks person and deals with lots of difficult horses, so she can help with pain issues as well as behavioural.

Keep looking for the physical problem that's almost certainly there.
I knew there was something wrong with my horse, had physios, chiros, saddlers etc no one could find anything.
I thought it might be KS, seemed to coming from that area.
Took to good equine vets, found nothing, made them x ray the back to be certain, nothing. Asked if it could be in the feet and was assured it wasn't, horse was 100 % sound.
Issue continued and about 6 weeks later went hopping lame in both fronts... turned out to be navicular. Kicked myself for not x raying the feet when he was at the vets, I knew there was something wrong with him, even though the vets couldn't see it!

So, I know it's a pain but take him to a different vet, preferably a big equine one where they have specialists in all areas and keep pestering them until they find the problem.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

It could well be a mental/emotional/behavioural issue in which case an NH or IH trainer may be able to help. It is a bizarre problem, but I have read of several cases where horses developed very strange behaviour patterns that were fixed by someone taking the time to work out why the horse was doing it, and help them remodel their behaviour. So it sounds crazy but you are probably on the right track.

I would search some natural horsemanship forums or sites and try and get some one really highly reccomended. I know lots of people in Australia, not much help to you there, but have seen what they can achieve.

I highly rate jackie weaver, and so do a lot of people.

I'm so glad I saw this thread!!! We had Jackie round to see ours a couple of years ago and I lost her name & contact details and couldn't find her again! I highly recommend her, she has an amazing gift and gives the most incredibly accurate information - I used to be quite sceptic about this kind of thing but after her visit I am completely converted, there's no way she could have guessed the things she told me. She helped uncover not only a physcial problem that the vet hadn't spotted (and informed us of how it happened), but also helped with my rescue horses very messed up mental state, and helped me to understand what needed to be done to help him. She helped us to also understand why one of ours horses was suddenly refusing to go in a horsebox when he always had done previously - and on top of this, got their personalities spot on!!
She's a wonderful and very kind lady, definitely recommend her! Think I'm going to try and get some information on my loan mare & also see how my rescue case is getting on now that I've found her details again!
