I'm on the serious search for a horse and have been ringing up several ads and asking the usual preliminary questions you ask before deciding whether or not to go and view the horse.

Time and time again I'm getting a very vague and confused answer to "are the horses vaccinations up date? when were they last given?"

I'm beginning to believe that a lot of owners simply don't bother????

Probably right. However a horse not being vacinated wouldn't put me off buying it. If it was the right horse I would rather pay for the jabs than get the wrong horse with jabs.

I think I've bought one horse with Jabs upto date

I knew someone who wouldnt have hers done. Its not that expensive and it only has to be done once a year.
When I bought my mare she hadnt had hers done, it wasnt an issue with me. It definatly didnt put me off her.

i do not think i have ever bought a horse that has had its flu and tet up to date properly, it has never put me off but i have haggled the price due to this even if it is 50 quid

i just bought one that needed vaccinations started again, £30 for the first one, then another due in 4-6 weeks then another in 6 months then every other year. hope this info i am passing on it accurate and up to date, if not tell me and save me some money!

It is first Jab, 2nd jab between 21 and 92 days later, then 6 months then every year - not every other year.

Out of the 3 horses I have had only 1 had vaccinations up to date and that was ben the current one, I did however have them started with the others and continued with jabs.

It didnt put me off buying them.

My old vets had the horses on a twice yearly regimen of seven different shots . My new vet has turned my on to the Equine 5 way shot. It is done once a year and has all the 5 major jabs needed for where I live all in one jab.
The shot costs $25 and I give it myself .

Here are the vaccinations I give
Eastern And Western Encephalomyelitis, Flu, Tetanus and Rhinopneumonitis.
It is also a good idea here to get the West Nile virus vaccine but mine have not had it yet this spring

I used to be required to do strangles when I had one of my horses at a stable as there were alot of horses coming and going.

I do not do strangles atm as my horses are at home and at a low risk so I do not think it is worth the possible complications
