So based in Suffolk I'm wondering if there are any current or future events or locations that hold regular events which would welcome general public with a camera. Ok granted that will mean most of them these days, but I'm generally trying to find some slightly closer horsey events/places to myself (thus far I've done most at the college I'm at, but that's a good hour or more away in Norfolk). So what is there to do and see and attend in Suffolk?

Newmarket heath first thing in the morning when the racehorses are exercising is worth a visit if you've not already done so. The best place to park is half way up Warren hill (the road that goes from Newmarket to Moulton) where there is a big hardcore parking area.

Thanks Jingle - I'll keep that spot in mind! Though should have said I'm on the East side of the East so Newmarket is a pretty long haul (likely as far as norfolk if not further).

Your local pack of hounds may well welcome a photographer - contact the secretary (mfha website has a pack finder per county) and see what they say. They may wish to confirm you are genuine, ie not trying to take pictures for hunt sabbing purposes, but we have two or three photographers out with all our local packs, they take some fab pictures!

Thanks for the suggestion Tractor! Will probably end up waiting till next hunting season - if I stick at things then at least by then I might be a touch more used to horses (to my mind a hunt is not the ideal place for someone only just working out which end is which whilst also fussing around with a camera). Might even give me the time to get a good shorter lens as I know hunts spend a fair bit of time before/after the event milling around (where the longer lenses I currently have a not very good for horses - unless all I want is an eye or an ear)

Sounds like a plan - if you want to get an idea of what our local boys do then look at bjc076 on picasaweb and wildways photography - totally different styles, but gives you an idea of what we're getting at the moment. Hannah walmsley and Sarah farnsworth also take some excellent pics!
