Looking for some advice from Derby locals please...

Hello ladies,

I am hoping some of you kind people would help me by giving me a bit of advice?

I am looking into the practicalities and costs of purchasing a horse. I’m not a total beginner but I have been out of the game a LONG time (almost 11 years). I have owned horses for quite a few years as a teenager but as I got older and got a boring mortgage my hobby had to go.
Now I’m in a position to start looking at getting back in the saddle. In the future I’m going to visit some riding schools and start having some lessons and see if I’m still up to it!
My questions are…
I’m currently living in Mickleover Derby. Does anyone know of any good liveries in the area? I know of Barley Fields but I would prefer DIY if possible and I think they offer full livery.
Secondly I was wondering how much things like livery, hay, straw/shaving, shoes etc cost these days?
I’m pretty sure it’s going to be more expensive then it was 10 years ago so would just like to make sure my estimations are realistic. I’m making myself feel very old here but I’m also very excited. Once you have the horse bug it never really goes away.
Any info will be gratefully received. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. xxx
 
Hi there is a DIY livery not far from Mickleover on Burnaston Lane called Oakdene. A friend of mine is there and she loves it. I'm not sure how much they charge though. The yard number is 01283 732353 x

Hi there i'm new to this forum stuff so hope you get this ok lol. Rough guide for prices for you going buy what I pay at the fantastic yard where I keep mine : big round bales of hay approx. £50 or small approx £3-4, big straw £25 or small £3, shoes around £70, livery for DIY £130 per month full livery/part livery is available and tailored to suit you and then there is a worming programme specifically for your horse hope that helps get rough guide of costs for you. Have you considered maybe getting a part share with someone? that way you can see how you get on back in the horsey world and some owners only want a contribution towards costs and at this time of year are happy for the help. Well done you go for it!!
 
Thank you very much. Yes your answer is great. I've done some more research and I think £300pm budget hopefully should cover the essentials. Sharing is a really good idea I didn't think about that. I thought about maybe looking to loan but knowing me I'd fall in love and want to buy which I know doesn't suit everyone wanting to loan. But a share might end up the same price as lesson to get back into things??? Still lots of thinking and research to do but I feel I'm getting more organised and have a more read list view of what's available and cost. Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it x

Your very welcome I really hope you find that special for legged friend soon there is nothing better than having a horse in your life. I know a few people who share and love it as time and funds don't stretch to having their own at the moment and they have instructors come to the share horse yard to have lessons on them. I know a few horsey people and places so if I can be of any more help just let me know good luck you wont regret it :)
 
Hello! I too am in a very similar position to OP- just getting back in after about 10 yrs :-) The price increase that has shocked me most is the shoes.....back in the day they were £35/ full set!! My husband is from Mickleover originally (in-laws still there), but we live in Ashby-de-la-Zouch now. I know a couple of hubbies friends who used to have great rates for livery in Willington. It was on a farm -sorry don't know the name or whether you'd be prepared to travel, but might be worth a google? Good luck- let us know how you get on!! :-)
 
The place in Willington (or possibly technically Stenson) could be Fryzams House Farm. No idea on the rates/what it's like, as I just drive past it every day on my route to work.
 
Thank you so much everyone. I'm am off in the car to have a nosy round the yards mentioned today while I've got some time off. I've also found one on radbourne lane less then 2 miles from my house which would be lovely. I've also heard of one in Repton which isn't too far away either.
Hoofing-it- I could not agree more on shoes! £35-£40 when I was last a horse owner now budgeting £65-£80! I am pretty sure I used to keep my horse for £80 a month ha ha ha. I feel very old at 30 :)

I'm now pricing up kit, rugs etc. I'm looking at horse boxes too as I never had a horse to do a bit of competing before but id quite like to try my hand at a bit of dressage or maybe go and pop a few jumps, bit of XC. So much to think about and a lot of penny saving to do!

I found the exact same- little livery yards etc are so poorly listed online!! I found the one I intend to use by stumbling into it by accident (was actually looking for another yard nearby). Luckily the owner wasn't offended and saw my opportune visit as a gift!!
