Hi

as the title says, I am looking for someone local who can repair quite a number of rugs for me which have gained rips over winter. One is urgent as its just the surcingal on my old lads rain sheet, majority of the others are heavyweight rugs with one or 2 rips in each.

Anybody got any numbers? don't really want them washing and reproofing, just sewing over then i can stick a patch over myself at a later date!

I am near Matlock, I know derbyhouse send them off somewhere and so do two dales post office but really wanted to find someone local i can drop them off at myself :-)

Thanks!

You will be lucky to find anyone to do repairs without washing first - the dirt damages the machines and in fairness to the person doing the repairs you can't expect them to get dirt all over themselves and their equipment.

The main one I want repairing without washing is my old boys lightweight sheet. The surcingal has come off on one side and just needs putting back on, tempted to hand sew it on myself but worried my sewing wont be strong enough!

I just don't like washing rugs as it takes out alot of the natural water proofness but if i have to have them washed, again, I would rather use someone local :-)

All rugs will have to be washed before repairing, even if they seem clean they carry alot of bacteria and under the health and safety act no saddler or repairer is obliged to repair dirty rugs. Also very fine dust can get into the workings of the sewing machine and ruin it.

Ok

I get the point about them being washed. I am aware of that, I was just trying to have a surcingal sewn back on as thats the only thing broken on my old boys rain sheet. All the others can be washed. I will hand sew on if needed. I would just like to find someone local.

So, can anybody suggest anybody local who is fairly cheap where I can have my rugs washed, reproofed and repaired please?

Have a go at mending them yourself. Horsey won't mind if the sewing isn't beautiful - just needs to be strong, so use some extra strong thread and it should be fine.

Nothing to do with post, but I went to St Elphin's (in the olden days!!) - do you know it?

Yes, that's the place! It was a boarding school in my day. We lived abroad when I first went there, but I live 'darn sarth' now! lol!! (Kent) It is a beautiful part of the world up there, though. But we did get some weather while I was there!!

Apologies for the threadjack, but I'm getting nostalgic just reading about it :D I lived for the majority of my life on the hill just above Darley Bridge, only moved away about 6 years ago. I keep meaning to go back over for a visit (to friends and countryside!) but haven't found time. I hear Matlock has changed a lot though, one-way system and everything, who'd have thought!

PS I think we found someone to repair rugs through Matlock saddlery when we lived there - is that still open?!
