My horse has a bit of an issue with regular side reins as he was forced into an outline using them when he was younger so I'm wondering if I can get hold of some that are really nice and stretchy so that they don't force him into a position but encourage him into a correct outline while lunging??

I use elastic leg straps from turnout rugs as side reins- they are super stretchy and work really well if a horse is a little 'shy' about taking a contact.

awesome - thanks guys! Will look into all suggestions! The ones I used before had an elastic section in them but he didn't like them. I might try the lungee bungee as it looks quite good (certainly sounds elastic doesn't it!) None of my turnout straps are elastic :( but will look out for some too as I love a good bargain if I can get one instead of shelling out on expensive kit!

I've made my own lungeing/riding tool based on a piece of kit my YO has which was just called an "elastic" when she bought it many many moons ago.

It's a highly elasticated piece of "rope" that goes over the horses head behind the ears, comes through the bit rings and down between the front legs or onto girth straps/roller at the side.

I bought some elastic cord from B&Q and two snap hooks and made my own. That way it was sufficiently elastic for my previous boy who was very wary of taking a contact on the lunge.

Bet you could do the same with side reins if you wanted, just cut the thing in two :)

I use rubber O rings, the sort you can get to fix vacuum cleaners and such , and baling string. Flexible ,infinately adjustable, use a quick release knot, and cheap.
