Hi,

Can anyone suggest a suitable conditioner or type of feed for my OH horse. He is 16.3hh Welsh cob x ID. Lovely chap but can stress when away from his mates or change of routine in anyway. He has ad lib hay, plus feeds and grass, Through the summer he is out most of the 24hrs in winter he is out for 5 hrs per day. Currently fed on SB and D&H competition mix + soya oil. He is worked 5-6 days per week.
The problem is he could carry more Kg but he also needs more energy as OH would like to do more ODE but horse runs out of oomph half way round a XC.

Any suggestions?

I had an eventer on comp mix, he was picky and that was his preference when he first came into the yard but he tended to look tucked up and had a few other minor issues so I changed him onto Allen and Page Calm and Condition, he had previously refused to eat fast fibre but loved C&C with micronised linseed, some alfalfa pellets and salt, his condition improved as did his other issues, he always finished the feed he previously had always left a bit in the bowl, he became less girthy and his coat looked amazing, his energy levels were never an issue but he did seem to have less fizz and more stamina although that may have been due to fitness not just the feeding.

If your horse is running out of energy on the xc it will be in part due to lack of fitness not simply a feeding issue and a different feed may not make much difference if the work does not increase in order to build up his stamina.

Try spillers conditioning cubes? That's what my mum feeds her thoroughbred who was always on the skinny side. It gives energy but without adding to her stressy behaviour and she now has put on weight not to mention it's given her a fabulously shiny coat! Might be worth a try? x
