Re my post yesterday about a weepy patch on Trixie's face http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4756882/an/0/page/1#4756882

I brought her in this morning and it looked like this.......

So again I hibbiscrubbed, rinsed and dried it, and this is what the skin looks like underneath.........

I have put some more demobion on it.

Any ideas what it could be please ?

ok, I don't think what Frank gets ever seems to look that angry. I think once the hair has gone they tend to stop being so weepy and just look more like like the cleaned up pic. Has it spread at all.

Can you email the pic to your vet and see what they think?

It looks very similar to what my friend's horse gets - an infected fly bite. She gets some ointment from the vet - I think it's called Fuciderm. Clears it up in a couple of days.

Doesn't look too much like ringworm to me, more like a bite? I would try tea tree oil on it, till it dries and then aloe vera gel (mind you I use those two on most things! )

Thanks for your replies

I guess it must be a reaction to a fly bite or similar (haven't discovered any other patches on her). Just seems odd that when I first noticed the "tree sap" there was nothing on her skin at all to indicate a bite or irritation.

I think I have got some fuciderm, will have a look, I am pretty sure I have got some aloe vera though

Horse at our yard had what looked like sunburn on his nose. Vet took a scraping, I dont know what they found but he also prescrbed fuciderm and the infection cleared within days. He did think it could be a fungal infection.

Oh now you've post pics, I can see it is similar to the thing my mare had!!!

I just cleaned with hibiscrub, whacked some sudocrem on it. It did clear up, but I do think it's a bit of a fungal infection, possibly from a fly bite that becomes infected. It looks nasty, but, like your horse, mine wasn't itchy with it at all!!

ETS - demobiom will help it!

Hmmm odd my horsse had the exact same thing on his face today! I just cleaned it with salty water then put some antibacterial cream on with a fly mask so he doesnt get irritated. It looks nasty though doesnt it!

Freddy had exactly the same thing last week, same size on his face, at first it looked like some sap from a tree had gotten stuck on him but then I realised it was part of the wound. I did not nothing as it looked quite innocuous and it healed over in a couple of days.

My mare has had this too and it's just due to flies.

Slap on the Sudocreme and try to keep it covered with a fly mask and it will clear up.

Just takes a wee while for the hair to start growing back.

LOL - promise I am only using a little teeny tiny bit!

I am very grateful to everyone's replies and reassured that it appears to be quite common!

This evening it had definitely dried up quite considerably so fingers crossed it will look much better tomorrow.
