Loony horse on boxrest... got kicked last night, scary...

Thank God we only have one day of boxrest left before Missie goes back to the vet tomorrow. Having been an angel for most of the last month, she has been completely loopy the last few days, I'm not sure whether it's the wind or she's just feeling well. Walked her last night and she shot off in the school several times, the last time she got away from me and did the most enormous buck which caught me on my side just above my right hip. Completely winded me, I was lying on the ground making this awful noise because I couldn't breathe, really frightening

This is the second time she's done this, the first time she caught me on my left thumb which is still sore 2 weeks later and black and blue. I am horrified to admit that I'm quite scared of walking her now

Anyway pointless post really but just wanted to get it off my chest as I'm feeling rather stiff, sore and sorry for myself this morning!
 
(((((HUGS))))) not looking forward to this with our big mare! Can you give her ACP to take the edge off her - we have had to.

If she wasn't going back to the vets tomorrow I'd probably give her ACP this afternoon to walk her, but thought I'd better not as I'm not sure what they'll be doing with her. If it's windy again tonight I may not bother at all as it's just this one night left and I'm not feeling particularly strong or mobile if she decides to be a twit again. I've got everything crossed that they will say she can be turned out again as not sure I can cope with much more of this!!
 
Unfortunately I don't have one, or any chance of getting one before tonight

However if she needs walking in hand again after tomorrow I think it would be a good investment!!!
 
I'd be safe and don a body protector and hat whenever handling her....can you lead in bridle with a lunge line instead of a rope so if you feel her "go" you can move further away to a safe distance but still keep control? Fingers crossed you both make it to the end of boxrest safely.
 
Poor you, I have been through the same thing. Do you have anybody to help you, maybe have a rein or lunge line on the other side to help pin her down? I used to have carrots to distract Rose when I felt she was going to launch herself and that helped but only because she was totally food orientated.

Feel helpless, but we are here in spirit!

Body protector and hat is a good idea I think. As is carrots, Missie is also completely food oriented

Well fingers crossed she can go out soon. TBH I thought that box rest was completely OTT in her case, but you have to go with veterinary advice don't you?

Sympathise, as my 2yo was on box rest last spring...although she was pretty well behaved (just as well as she's built like a heffalump).
I'd second the suggestions that you lead in a chifney or bridle....failing that a lunging cavesson (fitted securely) or control headcollar with a lunge line might help.
And do wear hat, gloves, back protector, good shoes (and chain mail if you have any!). I also carried a whip with my girl...

If you're scared I would not walk her today, she wouldn't benefit an awful lot from one day's hand walking anyway.

I hope you have assistance when you're taking her to the vet.
 
I have fond memories of my Anglo-Arab when he fractured his pedal bone - 3 months on box rest & I was told by my vet to 'get straight on & ride him & not turn him out until he is quiet under saddle'. OMG! Fox has always been a bit of a lively ride at the best of times, with 12 ACP & 12 diazepam on board (bearing in mind he is only 15.1) he was walking down the road on his back legs and then leaping forewards fly bucking before walking on his back legs again... God job my glue is pretty good! I was very relieved when I was able to turn him out. My dressage horse has been on complete box rest for the past 3 months with a fractured splint, another 4 weeks and he can start going out... Not quite sure how I'm meant to be getting him down to the field gate yet as he can be a monster at times when being led... even with a bridle on

Well if he tells me to do that with Beemer next month when he comes off box rest I really will be sending for the men in white coats for my vet... getting straight on a 16.2 hyped up competition horse that hasn't been out of a stable for months isn't my idea of fun!

...I had this with my mare last year...broke a finger in the process (unf gloves dont stop that happening)...it is permamently bent and a constant reminder!!!

At this rate the horse will be sound and well and I'll be hobbling around not able to ride!! One of those nights when you wonder why you bother...

Can completely sympathise, having just had my mare on two months box rest with 10 minute walking each day - its a nightmare isn't it. Only way I could keep her quiet in the end was literally just to walk around the yard - not quite what my vet wanted - he wanted us to walk in straight line up the road! Tried that twice, both times she went bolistic once outside the gate, to the point where one poor driver started reversing away from us, even though he was a good 50 metres away!!!!

Thankfully she went out for 3 months paddock rest last Friday after a visit to the vets. I was dreading the vet telling me to ride her on box rest! Not sure I would have survived. She had to be sedated at the vets just to get a semi sensible trot out of her on the lunge!

ACP'd her up and luckily for once in her life she has been sensible and not done anything stupid, just a bit of trotting around.

Horses eh, who'd have 'em!!

I really feel for you as I know exactly where your coming from, my boy was on total box rest cross tied to the door for all in all 4 months. I was so relieved when I was allowed to walk him out as I felt sorry for him, stupid stupid me!!! He had fractured his radius so one false move and his leg could have shattered. He had different ideas and he scared me so much. Sedalin worked at first but then he knew he was going out and would get that excited it didnt touch him. I bought a chifney and that probably saved his life as at least his feet very kept close to the ground. What made me laugh was the Equine hospital said I had to start with 5 mins a day and build it up to an hour a day to strenthen the leg before he could be turned out. I couldnt even get him off the yard as he just exploded even when we went in the car park. The first day I thought we'd walk arround the school as it was soft, we didnt even get a 3rd way up and he went mad, it took 2 of us half passing him back to get him out.
Fingers crossed you get good news tomorrow at the vets. Keep it up, this time next year it will all be a distant memory.
 
Thanks - reading yours and doublethyme's experiences it sounds like I've had it easy in comparison! It's really scary when they just take off like that on the ground, I'd much rather be on top and out of range of back legs. I had to trot her up on friday for the physio - that was exciting...

We'll see what the vet makes of her tomorrow. It's not like she's had a broken leg or anything, all she had was a sore back so I always thought box rest was a little unnecessary, but then again I can see why they want her in a controlled environment as at the moment they don't know what's causing the pain.

He said that he wanted her to have 4 weeks box rest with physio so that the soreness could calm down, I guess then allowing him to more accurately pinpoint the cause of the pain. They did an ultrasound scan at the time but it wasn't conclusive.
After rest and physio most of the soreness has now gone bar some localised soreness in the gluteal region, so presumably that will allow them to investigate that to see if there is a problem there, or alternatively if there is a problem in her hind legs. I have a feeling it may be the latter and that they may need to do x-rays, nerve blocks etc
