I am just actually watching (rather bizzare!) Pete Ramey's 'Tools of the Trade' DVD and think there is a lot more to do with actually the edge that you put on it rather than the knife.
Pete has a good bit about sharpening on his DVD, when I was in the USA with Todd Jaynes for one of my practicals recently most of my tools I found were really in-effective as I'd just used them straight from the farrier supply store, and had no idea I needed to be making edges on knives or modify nippers when they were new out the box.
When I came back I was on a mission to get a Wild About Hooves Wild Knife esp designed for barefoot and everyone seemed very happy with it, but they are in Austrailia and I was broke when back from USA, and still actually when trimming earlier thought I need to re-think the knife thing. That's AUS$130 + postage... Hum you've got me thinking again, or maybe I need to deal with my Cotram £15 knife (but not loop) and just properly sharpen.
Right going to get back to it.
Who have you trained through? I'm doing the Equine Sciences Academy course and am trying to get through Dr Eleanor Kellons NRC plus course - but it's all really detailed, I think it's going to take forever.. but at least it's detailed, and I'm learning so much.
