I'm currently looking at a new bit for my youngster and personally I prefer a fixed cheek piece but I noticed a lot of people use loose ring and was wondering what cheek piece people prefer and why?

I prefer to use a hanging cheek, full cheek or an eggbutt on a youngster to start with because these keep the bit nice and still in the mouth and encourages them to therefore have a quiet mouth.

I would progress to a loose ring if the horse wasn't respecting the bit or leaning on my hands iykwim :)

It depends on the horse and the situation .
But generally I prefer loose rings as the horses can move the mouthpiece so get more tongue relief.
