Hi all,

Loose schooling is not something I have done too much of with my mare, and after this evenign I'm not sure whether to feel like this si doing her good or taking steps back.. honest opinions..

She has recently been out of work (only for about 6 weeks). We are waiting on a new saddle now so in the meantime have ticked her over with lungeing and some free schooling. She will have a canter and buck and spend some energy then bimble around a little and I'll send her off changing direction and she occasionally joins up nicely after a while, definitely always ends up v submissive. We have a bit of a play in hand doing some yielding and backing up. Basically just mess around. Tonight there was a jump up (tiny tiny cross) in the school already so I decided to leave it (she jumps 1m happily, this was about 6inches!!). She was doing her utmost to avoid it which I expected but when she was having literally none of it I put it down to just a pole. She then decided it was okay on left rein but it took me about twenty mins of persevering for her to do it going right and she got v v stroppy and het up about it. As soon as she did it once I gave her a pat and took her in. Problem is, she is not a defiant mare and never gets wound up and will try it on once but never let things turn into an issue if you're firm. Today it felt like she was going against me on purpose and really getting into a frenzy about it. I feel like todays sesh has done her more calm than good even though I did 'win' in the end and I dont want to be teaching her to be a nutter when she isnt?? Does this make sense?? Am I worrying about nothing? I approached the whole session calmly and there were no outside factors but it just wasnt like her.

Sorry for length!

My guess is she just couldn't see the point of it and I'm further guessing that you didn't have guide rails up to get her into it.

Of my keen jumpers one will choose to jump anything left in the school, the other will go round it unless there's a really good reason (guide rails) for her to jump. Loose schooling her down a grid with rails didn't work either, she got going nicely down them and instead of turning at the end of the school she just popped over the end fence and pissed off into the field.

I wouldn't confront her again about it unless you have the situation very firmly under your control.
