how do u stop a horse falling in on its bad rein when loose schooling, because if i move towards him to push him out he just canters off and dosent stop. and the circle gets smaller and smaller.
im doing it in an indoor school alittle smaller than a dressage arena, no tack at all, i didnt think you should use side reins when loose schooling??
its just a bit of exercise i dont really want him to work too hard as im trying to make him put on weight its really just a bordom breaker.
he goes round the track on the right rein but as soon as hes on the left hes constantly stopping to change direction, or he ends up being the length of the lunge whip away from me....
I never loose school without tack. Otherwise tends to become a hoolie!!
Try using your corners of the school to help you. send him out with your body language. If he runs away instead of calmly going out block him so he stops. he may try to turn and run in the other direction. block him again. can get a bit heated but stand your ground and talk quietly giving him a command to calm. he may stand and turn and face you. go to him an give him a pat till he stand calm then ask him to head off in the desired direction at a confident walk. If he tries to run away block him again in another corner till he understands when you advance to him to push him out not to run away. When he gets this change dirrection at least every 2nd circuit to improve his balance - note which way he chooses to turn. Have you checked his back ??
Hope this helps
My horse only chooses to run in one direction when loose schooled too. He "hides" in the corners if forced to go the other way yet, oddly, it's his best rein when ridden.
i never know how to help him with balance, my friend says to start on bad rein and end on bad rein so he does more work on it,
ill have a go at the corner thing you mentioned, i can see it turning in to a crazy half hour though!
once he starts he doesnt stop!!
he had a massage about 2 months ago and no back problems noted, iv got the saddler coming so as his saddle is a little low on his back, but im only riding once a week at a walk so im not putting too much pressure on his back.
thanks it helps loads!!
just wondering, do u do more or less work on the bad rein? or a more of little and often routine?
