Beau is 12, has always had a weakness in his rear-end mainly near hind. Over the years this has manifested in various muscle issues which we have dealt with, however the most recent is baffling and lots of stuff to consider. I'm going to list absolutely everything in the hope that it might sound a chord with someone...
Timeline:
*Jan and Feb he was going really well. Jumping really well and happily and working well on the flat.
*Towards the end of Feb early March things started to go wrong. We noticed that he wasn't 'right' (ie a bit stiff) to the extent that I withdrew from the local SJ comp. Started 'clicking' in the hip/stifle region.
* Following Thursday had the chiro out who found that he was sore behind the saddle and tight in the hamstring - probably from compensating for soreness else where, but couldn't pinpoint it. Wasn't entierly happy with his feet.
* Sunday did a DR test (Novice) well, worked really nicely. Last canter was a bit sticky.
* Followed by an 'easy' week - mainly just hacking little bit of schooling.
*Sunday (27/3) I took him to a jumping clinic. Basically he refused alot and at the end
we noticed he was lame on the near hind - not bringing it under himself at a canter at all.
* Tuesday had the vet out. He said that he appears to have a loose/clicking patella in the near hind. Recommended a course of Estrogen 3 injections over X weeks. And an exercise regieme of trotting up hills, powerwalking in straight lines.
While all this has been going on he has had a runny nose, been rolling alot more than 'ususal' and on Sunday noticed that he was peeing funnily so also asked the vet to take blood & pee samples to see if he could see anything odd. All normal except a bit low in K & Mg so getting suplement.
Anyone used/ have thoughts on the use of Estrogen to deal with a loose or 'popping' stifle? What i have read online is pretty disparaging and mainly seems to be used in young horses with an exisitng /long term problem.
This is a new thing in Beau and no vet/chiro has ever commented on stifle issues before. As far as we know he hasn't had any injuries/bumps that might have damaged things.
Sorry for the lenght, but though that more might be better than less in this case. Piece of choccy cake to recover from reading!
