Lord give me strength - ideas people?

I am going to kill my horse.
As you will have seen from his photos Hovis has a very large pinky white nose so like many horses tends to burn in hot weather.
As a good mum i put suncream on his nose - high strength, extra gloopy so it won't come off. His answer to this? To either wipe if off on me / YO as you walk him down to the field, on his own feathers or on his brother......
So out came his Crusader mask - hoorrah thought I! "Very good" said our lovely YO - "I like that".
Alas Hovis does not. And despite he and his brother being seperated by electric fencing they have managed, without fail to remove said mask every day. Poor YO goes and puts it back on and then watches as Hovis walks up to Pride to have him remove it for him.
The end result is a very sore looking nose and now a great big cut down his face where Prides teeth obviously got a bit too close.
Short of parcel taping his mask to his head has anyone else got any ideas on how I can keep something on to keep his poor nose protected?
 
Sorry, i have no ideas. Although there was a good thread the other day which should still be fairly near the realms of findable on the new HHO layout. I can offer sympathies though, with 2 pink sore noses at the moment. They came in for the day and had some sudocrem on the other day, to give them chance to recover a bit.

Someone on the other thread suggested those multicoloured sunblock sticks you get for kids. Sounds like it would be harder to wipe those off. To be honest, a good suncream should rub in and protect, so he wouldn't be able to rub it off. Ours have it put on twice a day. Still looking a bit sore, but not too bad.
 
I use Sudocreme on my horse's white nose and chin (I do slap it on). I have found it better than sun screen as it's thicker and it lasts all day whilst I am working. There isn't any need to reapply after 4 hours. There are patches on the fence, grass and water troughs were she's rubbed her nose but there is no signs of any burning and keeps her nose baby soft and there is always the remains on her nose 10 hours later when I return.
 
OK, with a huge disclaimer that this might be a TERRIBLE idea - what about a clear protector sunspray? They dry really quickly and leave no residue, so he would be hard pressed to wipe it off.

I say again - this might be a TERRIBLE idea...
 
I have the same problem so have gone back to a shorter flymask without the nose coverage - he like Hovis will pull off a fly mask if it covers his nose. I put sunblock on but also bought equine aftersun which does help..
 
Spudlet - this actually isn't a bad idea. My friend uses this for her horse, she buys the waterproof one for kids. She sprays it on her hands and wipes it onto her horses muzzle. It's worked very well so far this year.
 
I have the same problem with one of mine, she's a crafty begger and can get rid of fly masks, suncream and her fly rug in one simple move!:rolleyes:
Still have'nt found any creams with enough stickability out in the field, but gonna try the clear spray stuff. So fingers crossed it works else i'm gonna have to take shares out in sudocream!:p

I have used sudocrem, kids waterproof factor 60, horse suncream - you name it I have tried it.
Its only one side of his nose that gets sore but he just wipes his head vigourously down his feathers or all over his brothers bum. Either that or Pride stands and licks it off for him.

As for the mask - last year he was fine with it. This year obviously not - the two of them are so adept at getting it off its unreal. If it wasn't for the fact there is a serious reason why he's wearing it it would be hilarious. Neither of them is stupid and at times far far too smart for their own good!
 
could you wipe the flymask with something nasty? I "think" someone has suggested washing up liquid as a deterrent but am not sure if this is toxic or not..

Let me know before you do your big Sudo shop - I'm about to buy my stock as the share prices will go through the roof - best buy the the shares now and we can sell once they've rocketed :D Damn pink noses!!!

Hovis - I am so pleased my youngster and big horse do not live with your horses, they'd be plotting to take over the world!!!
 
Naf 'No bite' will sharp stop those games! I put it on all my horse's rugs (including his fly rug) as he is a determined destroyer/remover of anything left near/on him. It's harmless, a bottle lasts for ages (will do 4/5 rugs) and tastes revolting!
 
Thank god my two leave their crusaders alone. I would try some spray to discourage the other taking hold of the mask, don't suppose you could put an extra line of tape between them to keep them apart?

Sudocream for the sore nose and one of the waterproof high factor kids sprays for the daft bugger's nose to keep it pink and kissable.

Final though, leather head collar left on top of the mask might help it stay on.
 
QR, not sure if this has been said

Could you add another strip of electric fencing between them so they can't reach each other?

Or if not, the putting something nasty on the mask sounds a good idea. :)
 
Ditto Theresas' suggestion, could you put a double row of fencing up so that they are just out of touching distance. A friend of mine has the same problem with her 2 boys, they will pull fly masks off of each other and then play with them like 2 dogs with one of those tuggy rope things. Quite funny to watch, but gets expensive and as you say, doesnt help the pink nose issues. Im sure Hovis will have his own views on this tomorrow:)
 
We stitch a square of material to the noseband of the headcollar. It then hangs down over the nose as they graze/stand and stops it getting burnt.
 
My mare Bonnie always but always removed her Crusader fly mask... Since purchasing a lovely Premier Equine one (extra large) she has yet to remove it.. in fact so impressed was I that I bought a spare... Might be worth changing make ? Good luck, I know the frustration when your pinky nosed beast does this, my girl is totally white (with a few dappled patches) so burn soooo easily...

You can get just the nose part of a fly mask (make escapes, me think they call them muzzle guards), he'd have to wear a head collar, but would that give Pride something to hang off ?
 
My old boy hated flymasks with a passion and had a pink nose so I tried these nose protectors but found that they used to slip sideways so sometimes only half he nose was protected. You may be able to find a way of keeping them straight tho. That's if your other horse doesn't pull the whole head collar off tho!!

What I found did work (he would rub sun cream off his nose) was P20 Sun Cream it is expensive but a bottle lasts ages, you didn't need a lot, it lasts ALL day and it sinks in really quickly so the horses don't actually have time to rub it off. Never had a sore nose after I found P20!!

After losing my old boy (RIP) I now have no horses with pink noses and it's much easier!
