Lorries on Lanes

i agree with you there RosiiePimms and you lankydoodle, but like alot of things in life that make us mad we do not and will not stand up to it take it to the right people who can sort somthing out. the goverment has made ads for drink driven now make one for car drivers to beawear of whats on roads and why we must drive with care. drivers will always think there above everyone who walks in there way even other car drivers alot needs to be done ie take there rights to drive full stop away. i am good when i ride i keep to where i should be on my horse and thank alot of car drivers for taken care when passing me , but i will not stand for them that dont give a hoot and yes i will let them know. i had one taxi try get between me and a parked car i could have had her side window. all she had to do was wait 5 mins for me to pass as there was a space for her to wait in been as i had right of way as cars where parked on her side. i gave her a pice on my mind . she stopped to confront me as i had stopped to wait for her. her passanger gave her a right gob full and pointed out i was with in my rights to tell her to go read higtway code. so nothing is going to be done onless we make a stand.

Well I didnt realise this would cause such debate!! To further on my story this morning some walkers then came around the bend after the lorry had passed me. They said that he had nearly mowed them down as well with no acknowledgement, so obviously I had just encountered an ignoranious this morning who had got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. My point though is that I have been riding on country lanes for 5 years now and its getting worse. We do have to sometimes ride on a A road to join up with further bridleways and this seems to be safer and the traffic far more considerate than they are on lanes. I cant understand that lanes that are as wide of a width of car can be 60mph limits when you have walkers, cyclists, tractors and .....horses mainly using them.

Animals. When passing animals, drive slowly. Give them plenty of room and be ready to stop. Do not scare animals by sounding your horn, revving your engine or accelerating rapidly once you have passed them. Look out for animals being led, driven or ridden on the road and take extra care. Keep your speed down at bends and on narrow country roads. If a road is blocked by a herd of animals, stop and switch off your engine until they have left the road. Watch out for animals on unfenced roads.

Horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles. Be particularly careful of horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slowly. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and remember riders may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse or rider. Look out for horse riders’ and horse drivers’ signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Take great care and treat all horses as a potential hazard; they can be unpredictable, despite the efforts of their rider/driver.

When I was having car driving lessons my instructor asked me a question, it was, what could be comeing towards you on your side of the road which you MUST give way to, of course at 17 years old and having passed my MOT motorbike test and RAC/ACU motorbike test as well, I thought I knew the answer, I came out with the obvious answers, Police Ambulance, but the answer he was looking for was "pedestrian", never forgot that in 38 years of motoring.

No, you just came across a skip lorry driver. In my VAST experience as a road user, in cars, on motorbike, bicycles and horseback, skip lorry drivers are the WORST most inconsiderate drivers out there.

Anyone tries the 'you don't pay road tax' argument with me, I point out that I do pay road tax, for my car and for my motor bike, so by their own reckoning I have MORE right to use the road than they do. Doesn't work though, I still get told to ...well, you know.

Can't agree with this at all - I actually find that they are amongst the most considerate.

It's the 40 something mother who doesn't seem to grasp the concept of taking care around a bend....

Yummy mummies in 4x4s who move out to the country get my vote for the worst.
They move over the border to a country area but keep an address in Northen Ireland so they can still send their kids to school there and pay less taxes.
One slid past me while I was hacking a 4yo, gave us about an inch, and she had a baby seat in the back, would have been all the same if the youngster had put her window in.

this is a long battle between cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders and cars you ask any of the above and every one has there point of view on it.

i ride on both "quite lanes" and i have to ride on a popular country lane to get to my bridal path my advice is

everyone in the list above need to take care and attention when driving on roads that are not motor way as these roads have there hazards, whether its horse, cars, cyclists, kids playing or dog walker/pedestrians there is also cattle/sheep on roads nowadays.

many car drivers think they own the road yes this horses were her before cars is true but at same time cars are desired for road now, we have to share roads with a range of things from legs to wheels. at same point Ive found many cyclists who slow down or dismount for horses as well as dog walkers who turn there dogs backs to me, also car drivers/lorry/mother bikes who slow down and give me enough room you will get stupid drivers no matter where you go. I know a neighbours son who often boast about driving country lanes like a ar****le because police aren't likely to be there. so care is needed but you wont see me off roads because of one or 2 bad drivers.

As for moving yards this yard has quites ts roads in area for me and i still get idiots on road regardless i wont be pushed off roads as i think we ALL have a right to be on roads

best thing you can do is be polite, were reflective gear and listen out most drivers are unaware the damage/speed they should pass you as well highway code isn't that clear but you both must share road.

Hear hear Michelleice which was my thoughts as I started this post - there isnt a huge solution to this - just wear reflectives, keep an ear out,be courtious and polite to the cautious drivers that are out there. You could probably find only a handful of yards that have glorious off road hacking and that would come at a premium cost. I believe that it does do horses good to come across "safe" everyday hazards! Hats off to my horse who has saved me on many a near miss but then jumped out of his skin when he has gone around the corner and seen a crisp packet on the floor!

Well I must be lucky where I am.Almost without exception ,the motorcyclists slow and pass wide. The truck drivers are generally pretty good too,but its the car drivers that are a problem.Truck drivers and motorcyclists spend their daydriving evasivly, because thats the nature of driving these things.Car drivers seem to think that slowing from 70 to 50 and allowing two feet clearance instead of one is considerate driving.
