I'm thinking that maybe I should hold fire on the trailer/jeep thing and save up £5000 to buy a lorry.

Would I get something decent for that which would be more or less reliable? Would only have to transport 2 x 16.2 and I can drive up to 7.5 on my licence.

We're based just outside the Lez so thinking that come July a few more lorries will come up for sale.....

Anyone managed to buy a decent lorry for that sort of price?

You can have mine for that! hee hee, bit scruffy now it is though. You should check out horsemart and see what sort of things are available for that sort of money, I think it is possible.

I bought a great little 3.5 t lorry for £1800. She starts every time goes out most weekends. Looked a little battered when I bought it but a lick of paints and shes not too bad now. C reg but engine still good. I have had to have a bit of welding done, but it has been worth it. I can however only cary 800kg so not suitable for 2 big ones. But they are out there. There have been a few advertised recently for that sort of price that are 7.5 t so you might be in with a chance.

Mine looks gross (I'm not that bothered though) but has got me from A to B three times a week for the past nearly three years. Purchase price? Just over a grand.

i got my last lorry for well under £5000, it was very old but reliable and looked good. sold her for double what i paid for her. you just have to know where to look

Yes it's possible for £5000,if you just want to transport horses and don't want a Gin palace . Go to Measham Lorry Auctions and pick up a 7.5ton GRP Box Truck. There are lots of ex- parcel delivery trucks out there. Find and honest hard working welder, to build a ramp, replace floor or strenghten floor, build partitions and lockers. The most expensive bit is the living area bathroom etc. Do bit by bit when you have the time and money. I bought a nice 13ton GRP Box for £1750 plus VAT. So you see it can be done this is how horsebox builders make their money and only pay trademen £8.50 to £11 per hour for their labour and skills.

ahem!

SOME horsebox builders may buy cheap chassis at auctions etc, we dont ! we buy from main dealerships with full history etc and no older than 4years! We are looking at 15K plus for a chassis - so thats NOT how we make our money. Also ,yes, we have skilled guys for welding, fabrication etc, but materials are expensive with aluminium and steel just going up by 60%, and all fitments for the horsebox/caravan/motorhome industury are much more expensive than for other uses. so dont think we make a quick buck!
