I have sanction from OH to upgrade my lorry and need peoples thoughts on builders...good or bad...email me if you wish alexbonnell@hotmail.co.uk.Spec is for 7.5 tonne best plate we can get, budget around £30K. dont need really flash living, would need to sleep 2 one in luton one in living, only really want hob, not oven, fridge, loo, shower etc and stalled for 3. Preference is for Leyland Daf but not essential. Im in south East and would consider builder that takes in part ex or will sell my other lorry in the Spring. I have a few suggestions from others but would be keen to know what people have found with say Kevin Parker/Solataire and in the South East KM Elite or Corchaval...good or bad would be nice to hear experiences and or suggestions!!....cheers :)

I had a lorry to a remarkably similar spec built 3 yrs ago by Galaxy Horseboxes and I wholeheartedly recommend Dave from there. He rang/text/emailed me with pics showing progress every week, and the after sales care was also excellent (it was finished in June and come October when I went to use the heating a knob on the dash fell off - he sent a whole new thing free of charge for my OH to fit - he would have done it but I didn't have time to take it back there).

Only thing I will say is that I went for all the light options (Ali floor, fibreglass Luton etc) and the unladen weight was 5.4T, so payload is 2.1T, which isn't a lot for a 3 horse lorry. Mine is stalled for 2.

I think you'll have that issue with anyone though.

Sorry but I dont think you will get a quality lorry builder to do one for that budget, I have DIY built a couple of my own and there is a lot of hours and cost of matirials to do it right with lightweight stuff ,Personaly I would strongly sugest a used quality lorry your money will be safer and you will get more for your budget and you can see how much it weighs before you part with your money!!!! , I would look at a tristar if you need to carry 3 as they build light alloy body lorrys Popular with pro users like hauliers/dealers where payload is important , Kevin parker are very nice too if you want high end upmarket quality and looks...

I had a KM lorry from new (them were the days ;)) on DAF, was lovely, excellent build quality, had it for 7 years and can't ever remember anything going wrong or needed repairing, we had a 2 ring hob, oven grill, fridge freezer, plenty of storage cupboards and a internal tack locker which also housed a portaloo.

Stalled for 3, light Airy, sturdy I wish we had never sold it :(

I would highly recommend Morgan Jones Horseboxes, I've never been lucky enough to buy one myself, but I have seen a lot of the work he has done and it has always been to a very high standard and very competitive in price.

Silverline Horseboxes in Essex recently changed the chassis on mine and resprayed it, they did a fantastic job and build from scratch too. I can highly recommend them.

,Personaly I would strongly sugest a used quality lorry your money will be safer and you will get more for your budget and you can see how much it weighs before you part with your money

Ditto this - some bargains to be had buying nearly new lorries at the moment!

I had a Solitaire lorry from new until last year, on an N plate. It was heavy at 6.1t unladen but they now make lighter weight ones, just over 5t. Nice build quality and not badly priced.

I went to Priory Stud Horseboxes in Essex when I was looking 2 months ago and they had a new lorry just built, probably too basic for you but it was a very nice finish and v.good price for what it was. Nice guys to deal with.

Thorpe Horseboxes is just up the road from them, my friend has had 2 new lorries from them and have both been good. Also nice guy, Jason I think.

Peper Harrow would build you something too, near Guildford.

Or there is WHB, previously Wrens, in Piltdown, Sussex who also build, I was there the other week and the small lorry they had was very nice, and reasonable. Simon is a nice guy and has done very good work for me and my friends.

Maybe worth a trip to Essex/Sussex!

I would second Solitaire. It is good value and functional for the money and Steve is easy to deal with. Bought ours from new 5 years ago, been all around UK and to Europe in it, very happy
