Lorry CCTV

Yes I've got one of these in my trailer and it's fantastic. A good, clear picture and a bargain. It is better than some of those that are branded as being for horseboxes but where it is difficult is wiring it in. The instructions say just wire it into the light switch. It wasn't as simple on my trailer which is a Richardson's Excel - it took an autoelectrician two and a half hours to do it. I had tried in vain with my Dad to do it for days. Having said that, I'm delighted with it. The screen just plugs into your cigar lighter and you can move it between vehicles. Don't screw it to the dash in your lorry as it will fail its test if you do. I also bought their alarm system for my yard. The chap in the office is really helpful and they dispatch quickly.

I have CCTV in my lorry and have it on while I am driving, obviously I don't watch it while moving but do occasionally glance if I hear a bang or sudden shift.

If the screen is viewable by the driver from the driving seat then it is illegal

I am not debating it

seeing I travel solo its pointless having so only passenger can see it. Mine stick to the wind screen.

Its removed for the plaiting then goes back on and I am glad it does as when going down to New forest I glanced up when stopped at lights and saw one horse standing loose out of its head collar. so pulled over where safe and put it back on.

Most are mounted on the dash anyway so it most cases driver can see it. Every vehicle I have traveled it ALL have it where driver can see, whether its legal or not

Its your choice to chance getting points on your licence and a very large fine for doing it but as long as you are prepared to accept that without question...

I am not getting into a debate, I don't care if its legal or not. I have had the CCTV for over 8 years. Have had this horse box for 16 years

And unless I crash or drive erratically (which I don't when driving lorry) The fuzz have no way of knowing if I am glancing at the screen or looking across my windscreen.

Maybe you should start a poll and ask how many with CCTV actual glance at it while driving. I bet the results will not be surprising.

Most do not get caught by plod but by VOSA on a general stop check

Even if it is switched off, the fact that its available for the driver to see will incur a penalty because of the way it has been set up

Rog, I don't care so its pointless you trying to give me a serve on the law thank you I have been driving long enough.

So I thank you kindly But in the 8 years I have had nothing said and until the day *IF* it happens I will continue as I am.

This post I answered to the OP. I answered it if you want to start a thread on the law of CCTV go ahead.

Suppose you would give me a serve if I said my American car has no front license plate on when I drive it- its seats do not lock unless in accident - would you like any other thing to comment on there you go I opened a can of worms now lol.???

What is "a serve" please? I'm not being rude, it's a genuine question. And doesn't it affect your insurance if you drive illegally?

I can not imagine that it could affect your insurance as its not a modification. However insurers are sneaky bas$%^rds !

They are legal if they only activate when reverse gear is selected

I have a screen for the CCTV which switches to camera behind the lorry for when I'm reversing, and it also has Sat Nav on it...

I wasn't aware this was illegal? Surely that would make Sat Nav screens illegal?

My lorry has passed it MOT with the screen...the lorry company ( well known horse box company) didn't say it was an issue..?

That is the same as the set up on the Eddie Stobart horsebox and was one which I looked into

As long as the driver does not look at the internal CCTV image when driving then its perfectly legal

To view the satnav or rear view when reversing is legal as they are to do with the actual driving

I once traveled in a taxi and the driver was watching a movie on a small screen on the dashboard while driving! He said, "it's a great action film, there's a death every few minutes." I thought, there'll be a couple more too if you don't switch it off.

Then he said, "Don't worry, I'll put it on pause when we cross the busy junction.:mad:

As soon as I got home, I called the taxi company and reported him, but I'm not sure the person I spoke to me believed me. :(

Ok, thanks for the advice, I have no idea it was illegal to have it on and check it when driving, up till now I've usually have it turned off so I can check them when I hear a noise - I can angle it towards the passenger in future.

Well Let's start by saying I know what is safest and it's not a prat nav!! how many acidents have you seen caused by an occastional glance at horse cctv reported on the tv or IAM comic ???? and then the moronic actions of most people who have a prat nav stuck in the line of vision that they seem transfixed on!!!??? , sorry Rog but a distracted driver is a danger to themselves and other road users, and being able to glance at a cctv to see the horses are safe helps me to consentrate on driving safely so stuff the rules! mine will stay where it is, Oh and I read a map and plan a route I like to think for myself and understand my envronment....

Excuse me but I have not touched on any safety aspect because that will be different for everyone

I have stated what the law is and that is the same for everyone

I think the point is that it is illegal to have it in the cab full stop. Which to me seems rather stupid.

...
We’re watching you

Luxury horseboxes now often come with CCTV, and it is a very sensible addition. CCTV cameras are now available to be fitted in any horsebox or trailer and help to offer piece of mind, particularly if your horse is a difficult traveller. The technology is easy and safe to use and allows the driver and passengers to keep an eye on the horse in the back and can prevent serious upsets occurring.

This is the legal standpoint ....

The screen may face the driver if it is a multi purpose screen but the internal view must not be accessed when driving

The screen may have the satnav view when driving
The screen may show the reverse view when in reverse

The passenger/groom may watch the screen all the time

What ROG has once again left out is that apparently it's ok for coach drivers to have cctv. So the 'law' has exemptions, but apparently you have to have more people onboard to kill before its legal

I have not found any case of prosecution and one should ask any police officers that query it, why double deckers all have CCTV as standard.

Personally speaking when I use my sat nav in the car I use it more often stare at it longer than I Ever use the CCTV.

As mentioned coaches and double deckers have CCTV as standard

Here Here mine is staying where it is and only come off the screen for its plaiting.

and while we are on the subject what about all hands free when someone calls how many people take their eyes of the road onto the screen to see who has called??? double standards here too. The few seconds you glance at the horses is nothing compared to viewing phone screen or changing a cd or tuning a radio IMO or viewing the prat nav.

I had a internal/reversing camera in my lorry which I sold with the lorry.
I now have fitted an Ifor Williams digital camera to my trailer and I don't give a fuzz who knows it.

I would rather look, glace or stare at the camera and know my horse is ok going around a roundabout or after a tight turn, than have to pull over to the side of the road every ten minutes to check that he is still upright.

I willingly risk the wrath of the law...bring it on..:p

ROG..may I ask where you got this information from as I have never seen it on any official website so a link would be very useful.
