OK, I am going to sound silly, but I DO worry about everything. How difficult are hill starts in a 7.5t lorry. I have a phobia.

A lot easier than in a car

Put it in 2nd gear (1st if you're really loaded and the hill is very steep), and just release the air brakes with a little throttle...

Thanks. I've got another lesson on Sunday and I am driving to Crofton and will involve a hill start. Don't worry I wouldn't try is with Corroy on first time.

No it's not weird to worry about it! I have to have my daughter to keep me calm! particularly when some twit in a car is right up my chuff on a steep bridge!

Get yourself to a nice quiet steep hill and give yourself several practices. It'll be fine.

Although I am a very confident driver I don't like hill starts in the lorry.
I think it's because the 1st gear is backwards and you never use it unless for that, so changing to 2nd is an unfamiliar action.
We have a cutting near here called Sandy Park, it's sandstone lined high walls, starts with a corner and you can't see if it's clear until you actually turn into it, I loathe going up it (steep hill with an extra bend in the middle too and it's single track!!!)
Before now I have met 40 ton lorries from the local firm on there, and neither of us could reverse easily. Once when towing the trailer a lorry forced it's way past in the dark at 6am and pushed the trailer and pony inside partly over.
The other bad bit is coming home here, we have a single track steep hill again with blind corners, we all sort of hold our breath going up it waiting to meet someone and have to use first gear.
It's just part of driving a lorry I think, and something you deal with when you have to.. now I only carry two horses it's easier than when with three you could smell the clutch on a hill start!
