Anyone ever heard of or used a starter fluid to get their lorry started??

My Roadrunner has a little start pilote pump thing in the cab and from the picture on it it looks like I should be putting some fluid into it to help it start.

It started fine on monday, but yesterday in the cold cold weather it would turn over but just wouldn't fire up and I'm wondering if I might need to use this pilot and fluid thing.

Any help - anyone Pleeaassseee?

When it is really cold my old leyland does not like to start and if urgent will use a spray called cold start and put a very little amount direct into the air intake as turning the engine over, usually works but beware not to use too much as was told they become addicted to the stuff
good luck

My old truck was a Roadrunner and he was the same to start in the winter. A nightmare!

I didn't have the pump thing you describe but I had a can of Easy Start which I squirted into the air inlet behind the cab before I turned the engine over. I would have though your pump thing would be filled with similar starting fluid but I can't help with where you would get it.

I have one of the little button things in my Bedford, have never put anything in anywhere for it though? TBH mine has fortunately always started even when very cold but I have heard of the starter fluid stuff and apparently its very good - but did also hear that they can become a bit dependant upon it!

Its not a good idea to use it but if you engine is worn out then maybe ok if your roadrunner is pre 1989 is most lighty the terible old layland not the later cummins the main thing for reliable cold starting
is good baterys the faster the engine turns over the beter..
its worth useing a mains charger if the lorry isnt used much , only use easystart as a last resort as it can damage engines..

Its a cummins engine and I have just put two new batteries on it.

I have phoned the company that seem to supply this little pump thing - apparently it regulates how much of this ether based fluid is going into the engine so limits damage.

They are sending me a can of fluid asap.

Thanks for all your helpful comments

I have this problem with my Cargo and I just spray a tiny amount of easy start up the air intake pipe and she starts. The problem is where the cold start is its a pain to change and very expensive. Do not spray too much just one little squirt and have someone to there with you to start the engine as soon as you have squirted. My lorry always starts when the temperature is above 5 degrees other than that I have to use the easy start.
