I am hoping to buy a 3.5 ton Transit horsebox today, but a preliminary search for insurance has found that they seem to cut off at 70. My husband is 72, nearly 73, and it would be useful if he could potter about fetching & carrying in it (DIY things - not horses). I always used Anthony D Evans with previous lorries, but their screening questionnaire screens out over 69s. Any ideas, please?

I'd have a ring round of the companies that offer insurance, rather than rely on their online tools in this case. Shearwater, KBIS, NFU, etc, I am sure there are companies out there, you may just have to do some leg work to find them!

As far as I know my insurance covers anyone over 25 with a clean licence and my permission. (KBIS) Might be better to call the companies rather than fill in online as they will have more of an idea as to what they can and can't cover?

My stepdad drives mine and he is 71. We are with Four Counties and it was a 7.5t. Just upgraded to a 15t and it is insured for anyone over 25 with the correct licence

That's what it said on the Anthony D Evans website, ROG! There was a page of screening questions and one of them was whether drivers are over 69. We had the same thing when hiring a 3.5 ton to move house. They don't hire to over 70s. Although once we'd hired from them several times, it turned out that they would go to 73, but on a discretionary basis.

All moot now as o/h has decided that he wants to up the budget and keep looking. He also needs to Do Something re licence to get the ability to drive 7.5 ton back. There are very few 3.5 ton for sale & lots & lots of 7.5 ton. Might end up with a compact 7.5 again, although I really, really cba with the faff of plating & maintenance.

He won't need an hgv to drive a 7.5t as due to his age I am presuming that he passed his test before 1997? My stepdad could drive my 7.5 due to his age but I had to do a test.
