Can anyone recommend lorry insurance please?

I have been insured with Anthony D Evans which has been fine, except that, in the event of breakdown (the clutch went an hour and a half away from home) they don't send a Horsebox to take your horses home, you're expected to put the whole caboose on a low loader.

When this happened, fortunately a neighbour of mine was at the same show and had space on her lorry to take my youngsters home; they would have freaked out being driven onto the low loader!

So, I'm looking for lorry insurance for a 10 toner that will send out a separate vehicle to take horses home in the event of a breakdown.

Anyrecommendations please?

Do they send out a separate horse transporter if your lorry breaks down?

It's not clear from insurers' marketing that they do this, I guess I'll have to phone around.

I'm with Shearwater and i asked that question when I took out my policy and they said yes. They automatically include homestart too.

Before that I was with NFU who also said they did, I switched when their premiums went up.

Mine is a 7.5t which would make a difference to the premium but don't think it will affect the level of cover.

Another with SEIB - yes their gold breakdown cover sends out horsebox to take neds home in case of breakdown.

Shearwater for me. Home start breakdown and if they have to come and collect you they send a separatr Horsebox rather than load you and the horse onto a low loader. Really competitive on premiums too.

We use Equine Rescue Service for our breakdown recovery!

They send out a horse transporter to pick up your horse, tow your broken lorry to the place of your choice, garage etc

Would not use anyone else!

Been with them for loads of years, and their service is perfect and they actually understand horses!!!!

Had a tyre go and have been recovered. 10/10 for everything. And the control room always call you every step of the way to make sure you are ok and everything is happening as it should

I used to be with Equine Rescue Services but they got really expensive didn't they?

Thanks all, I'll ask for quotes from Shearwater and SEIB and will investigate ERS again.

I'm with KBIS and they offer breakdown and recovery for the horses too. Was the cheapest quote I got to for a 52 plate 7.5t lorry, plus I am on a provisional HGV :)

KBIS here too - and they also have proper horse recovery :)
It was close between them & Anthony Evans on price, but the horse recovery AND the excess made a huge difference (excess was £200 difference with a premium that was under £6 different between the 2!)

How do you get provisional hgv?

Have a medical done and send away the forms to DVLA, you get a provisional until you take your test. So you can drive it with someone in who has passed their HGV with L plates on, just like you're in a car. I can't anymore though as no one I know has done their HGV :( taking my test soon though

If you're getting an insurance package with breakdown cover included, do be careful you know exactly how your horses will be recovered if you can't be repaired by the roadside. The cheaper options tend to send low-loaders and dump lorry with horses on top. Only the specialist equine breakdown companies always send fresh, separate horse transport.

I've literally just got my insurance and breakdown from shearwater. Anthony D Evans were cheaper initially, but the breakdown wasn't as good as shearwater, so I rang shearwater back and they beat my Anthony D Evans quote.
Shearwater send out a seperate lorry if you breakdown, its a bit more than some breakdown cover but hopefully a better service.
