Do you need a medical for the C1 test? (7.5t)

The only medical my doctors offer is a HGV one (regardless of the fact the C1 is a nonHGV test!) and they've quoted £100. Is this normal?! - Price wise.
 
OH paid £80 for his 5 yearly HGV medical, his colleague paid £120, it depends on the individual doctors private rates rather than being a fixed fee. I am pretty sure you don't need one for the 7.5tonne test though.

oh, I've just googled it and I think you do need one, how ridiculous, I can drive one on mine because I passed my test before 1997 yet I don't need a medical, yet more money making I think!!

Why ridiculose. Do you have any idea of the damage seven and a half tonnes of metal can do at 60 mph. Yes you need to be medicaly fit to drive .
 
You do need a medical to drive anything over 3.5t if you passed your test after 1997.

My doctor wanted £120 :eek: I went through http://www.driversmedicals.com they are nationwide its £44 + vat. Still a lot for the 10mins it takes them!

Anything 3.5 - 7.5 ton (C1) is no longer a "non hgv" It requires an o licence, ministry plate, tacho, speed limiter, LEZ etc the same as an hgv. Both tests are the same its just the C1 is taken in a smaller lorry. Prices were about the same to so I thought i may as well kill to birds with one stone and did the C.
 
Its abit of a rip off really but if needs must!

I am medically fit to drive, i was just querying the £100 that they wanted to charge, I was imagining more around the £50 mark! Its not cheap to learn to drive a lorry! :o

Ridiculous in the sense that as I passed my test pre 1997 I don't need a medical but anyone who passed after that does! If it was a genuine safety concern rather than a money making scheme then surely the medical requirement should be applied to all who drive a vehicle this size. Same as the trailer test, I can tow a trailer with no training but for those who didn't pass their test before 1997 they need to shell out loads before they can.
 
It may be a safety thing but its not cheap either therefore still managing to make a fortune over it.

Ive decided now to go for my C test. :)

I agree, before we bought the big 4 horse lorry OH drove 2.9 Ford Capris and Sierra Cosworths to the max whenever he could, he's boss eyed without his contact lens and before I stopped him smoked rollies. He took to driving the lorry like a duck to water without any medical or training that went for towing as well. I passed my test after 1997 by 6 days I missed the cut off, but I drove the old box round the back lanes for practice before we scrapped it.
 
Don't use your GP, speak to the people who you are going to do the training with and get them to recommend someone - the website linked above look s good. GPs charge too much!
 
Well they'll need to get your records from your GP (the form requires you to fill in any past medical history from your notes... and only your GP will have them.)

I did my c1 license before Christmas, the medical was £130 with my doctor eeek!
Its just form filling, and the same medical as you would have for the c.

I just about got my head round it as the c1 license lessons for me were cheaper than doing the bigger c license.

Well worth it though, we have just got rid of the trailer I would never be able to reverse and somehow I passed the test first time, now I can drive my mum to shows for a change! She loves it!

Its the company im planning to train with as theyre really local - will cost £1200 for C class training and test fee. Again, is that good value or should i be looking further afield?

For the C1 training at the same company its £750 so ive decided i may aswell just bite the bullet and go the whole hog and do the C training/test!
 
I wouldn't go with the package they are offering. I bought the dsa dvd rom (£30) & managed to get all 100 questions right! OH got 99 :p

I would also be wary of a company who gives you a set price without doing a driving assestment. OH (driven 7.5t's) needed only 3 days :mad: & I had 5.
 
Where did you buy the DVD from? I've decided that I'll leave my medical booked with my GP. I've found another place which does a £40 assessment lesson then have your lessons but roughly would charge £850 for C. Which I've decided to go for now as opposed to the C1 after comments I've read.

I'm also planning to drive my lorry a few times before having lessons (7.5t) to get the hang of reversing/turning etc to hopefully lessen the amount of lessons I've got to have. Ideally need to find somewhere off road first before hitting the roads to get used to the size.

When you're over 45 you have a have a medical every 5 years to renew your HGV. My docs wanted £180 so I found www.doctorsonwheels.co.uk who are about £50. Very convenient, although a little weird as mine was done in a Motorhome in a parking spot on the A21... However exactly the same as the previous ones done by my doc and soo much cheaper.

I did my training years ago with EPtraining.co.uk who are based in Surrey - they were excellent and I passed first time with only 5 minors, so would really recommend them.
