Yesterday my lorry broke down, it was recovered and it looked like the fanbelt had just broke . Today we bought a new fanbelt and fitted it but as soon as we ran the engine the belt became slack. Then we noticed the automatic belt tensioner seemed to have a piece missing off the casting and it looked like it was newly missing. We have taken that off, it also sounds like the bearings in the spinning piece are slightly noisey.
If anyone has a mechanic hubby or Dad does this sound about right and will the unit come as a whole piece for us to just fit back on or are there other snags and problems. It is a Leyland Daf 7.5 lorry on an R reg.
Thank you if anyone can help me.Couple of pics of part

Would there be a specialist makers Forum you could look at?
I enrolled on the Daihatsu one, and gained lots of really helpful advice. good luck with your lorry.

If you can wait till tomorrow am?

I will ask my Uncle as we use to have a fleet of DAF's & he did all the mechanics on them.
He will prob be able to tell me.

I would replace it if the bearing is noisy , just check if the alternator or water pump is ok IE spins freely and no play in them also check the alternator is securely mounted ....

Clearly the belt tensioner failed causing your original belt to fail and your subsdequent replacement.Go to your daf dealer buy a new tensioner, ask for a trade discount, then have a word with someone from the service department re fitting it . I think it is pretty straight forward ,but check with someone who is doing this every day.
I think you are quite observant and have a future as a motor mechanic as long as you remember to keep asking for a tradfe discount.
