Is their an unwritten rule for where you tie up that I don't know about? Got to ride today and tied my horse to lorry (no one else around). All of a sudden woman unloads horse from lorry already there and it is "bum to bum" with mine. Fly, (my lad), puts ears back and I feel uneasy. Suggest to woman that it might not be a good idea to tie up as she has. She replies, "well i parked here first, was having burger, now want to unload, I have right of way so move your horse". Of course I DO. I do not want any kicking incidents. Is there some unwritten rule that I have no knowledge of?

Nope. At PC events the rule is no tying up really unless you are attending to said horse.
I always try and get dad to park far enough that we can tie up easily (at events is normally not a problem) but not always possible and then IMO it's whoevers horse is out first gets to tie!
That's very rude and asking for trouble too!

No she was being rude and obviously didn't give a stuff about her horse. I usually tie up on same side as grooms door but if someone has parked next to me with a side ramp on my side then tie up the other side to avoid accidents with the ramp. I operate on the first tied up has right of way, if she was too busy stuffing her face to unload her horse it is not your problem.

I always go with if there is a horse tied up already don't tie your up with in range. Having said that I have had someone park next to mine (I was there first) and tie their horse up the same side as mine was. I moved mine out of kicking reach just incase and the other people just stared at me, no common sense at all.

I think it is common sense, I always make sure that when I park there is enough room between me and the next lorry to tie my horse up to on the outside, taking into account that they might tie their horse the same side as mine, sometimes at shows in the winter with tight car parks this isn't possible.

If she had parked there first I don't blame her for asking you to move your horse.

I was at a show there other day and this guy parked his lorry very close to mine, don't know why there was loads of room, so I spoke to him before he switched his engine off and said could he move over please as it was the only place to tie my horse and he refused so I said fair enough your box if she kicks it, he moved it

There is 1 venue that I go to where inconsiderate car drivers park in the small designated lorry park, so those of us who arrive around midday in lorries (adult classes start at 1230) have to take our chances and park our lorries where we can.

Fortunately us adult lorry users are very cooperative and we manage to find space around each other to tie up safely.

No there is no rules, unfortunately some people are just incredibly stupid.......Have found they tend to be quite cautious if you inform them you have a stallion on board though

The other one that pisses me off is those that bring dogs and let them run looser then the little b*****d things piss in your lorry and all over ramps and haynets(urgh!)

Bucket of water is effective repellent.....or the end of foot!

i just dont put them the side with other horses so she was being rude in doing that and stupid tbh!

dieseldog- i think she meant that although the other lady had parked their first she hadnt unloaded, so moneypit already had her horses tied up.

ROFL. That cheered me up eventing_chick.

I usually just keep Gen in the lorry but I remember when he was quite young and wouldnt stand on board so I had him tied to the side of the lorry (actually this was at a BD Regionals as well). This women next to us got her horse out of her lorry and walked it straight past Gen's bum within inches and then tied it up with its bum touching his. Now Gen wouldnt kick anything (raving wimp) but this other horse was laying it ears flat back. So I decided to move Gen to be on the safe side .... only to hear the woman get 'snotty' about it.

Some ppl are just WEIRD!!!

Probably you may have parked a little close.. I always try to leave as much room as possible in case they tie my side as well as me.
We now take a section of electric tape and rour fencing posts and make a corral round the stallion, it makes people aware they should keep a reasonable distance and ensures we have a chance of grabing him if he ever escaped (he gets tied with two leadropes, one to the string, one to the ring..
I got a right mouthful from one woman in Somerset earlier this year, I always politely warn my neighbours we have a stallion tied next to them, so if they prefer to move they can and in this case he was still inside the box.
The mare in her box was barging her about and she was in a right state, screaming at the horse to behave and generally getting very het up saying she didn't know what was the matter with her. When I told her we had a stallion next door she was incredibly rude and more or less told me I was upsetting her mare and should stay away from competitions..
I bit my tongue and walked off, so was even more surprised later that day to have her approach me on the XC.. fearing another mouthful I prepared to give her as good back, and was a bit surprised when she asked for his stud card and where we lived...

It seems she was so impressed with his behaviour and ability she fancied putting said mare to him next year!
I agree people who take dogs then allow them to roam or bark non stop drive me nuts, ours stays tied up or in the cab.
Another gripe is collecting ring behaviour.. Southcott (Winkleigh) seems to have the worst behaved people ever, go to a HT there and they are loonies, careering into you in the ring and passing by at virtually a gallop risking a kick.
I keep wondering how to mention it to the owners, but they are such sweet people I don't want to offend them, they do their utmost to give everyone a good time..
What they need is someone with a megaphone yelling at the culprits, that would sort them out.

yes, I would go with if she parked there first, then you should have given enough room regardless of whether her horse was tied up at the time or not, for her to tie up and yours also.

We have lost count of the number of people that leave room for our side ramp but dont have the foresight to realise that because WE HAVE A side ramp, we cannot tie up on that side too!! DOH!!! and leave us with nowhere to tie up. Drives me nuts!

The first thing i do when i park is take note of how the surrounding lorries load and unload and where they tie.

Then i decide where to park. Its just plain common sence but i guess some people lack that!

A friends horse was at a show with mine and a lady with a dog and pulled into a really tight slot between us and the next lorry that didnt exsist and ties up her horse and dog. My friends horse hates dogs so i went to give the lady a polite worning so she could move her dog from harms way ( its was 6 ft behind ben tho is 17.2 ) . She started a row with us and left her dog there ben freaked and kiced the dog flying when it barked and inured it and she went nuts.

Some people have no reguard for their own safety let alone that of others. Theres no excuse for ever being rude in these situation we dont ask for fun but for all out benfits.

Perhaps we need a book about lorry parking etiquette.

..I'm still trying to work it out......it appears ok for others to park at right angles to my ramp so it is difficult to load/unload safely and we have to wait or ask for them to move to leave a venue.............but when at our first BSJA event I held up my hand to ask a rider to wait a minute a few lorry lengths back before proceeding, as my husband was in the process of reversing out of a space ( the neighbouring lorry were holding their 2 horses who had been tied up alongside while we did this) I was subject to verbal abuse by the riders mother! Very upsetting.

We have an Ifor Williams trailer (would love a lorry but never mind). What bugs me is when you park and leave a gap between you and next lorry/trailer for the front ramp and some muppet comes and parks there so that when we unload Murph he is nearly in their car. On more than one occasion it has been someone else with a front unload trailer so you would think they would realise what they are doing. On a slightly different topic, at a show recently someone tied their pony to the back ramp of trailer, which wasn't done up. Pony put head down to graze and ramp came down on her back. Several onlookers were horrified, silly owner thought it was funny!
