My sister used the lorry yesterday to go hunting, Ive just (today) noticed a very small patch of oil leaking underneath, Ive laid down and looked and its at the back under the Diff, and that has oil on it too, so is it possible for the Diff to leak, and although I know the name I dont actually know what its function is. Any ideas??

Kick on. It definitly wasnt leaking before there was no oil patches on the yard any where and as I walked back from the field toward the back of the lorry I could see it underneath.
JunoXV. Thanks for that will ring mechanic in morning and see if we can book it in, we need it for next Tues.

SMID. Ive just been outside and looked again, definitly no oil leaking under the engine part, just some spots under the diff and the back of the diff(the part that you see if stood looking from directly behind) is covered in oil.

I had this problem, or a similar one. Get it checked out. Mine was a thin pipe that carried the brake fluid, it had corroded and Im told was a disaster witing to happen. If its an Iveco, you have to get the pipe made for you, Iveco do not stock it. Mine only cost £15 and Im told its a common thing to happen.
If you get underneath, I had a clear oil like liquid that had 'gathered' on top of the 'thing' in the middle of the back axle and was dripping on the ground. Above this 'thing' is a thin long shaped metal pipe. Mine was attached correctly either end but held to the chassis with cable ties??

If the diff itself is covered in oil, then this sounds quite likely. Check the brake fluid level, if it is low and dropping, then there is a very good chance it is the brake feed pipe.

The 'thing' in the middle is the diff (differential). It transfers the drive from the engine / gearbox to the rear wheels and also allows one wheel to travel faster than the other when going round corners.

Yes it is possible for the diff to leak.A common fault on Cargos and eurocargos is the pressed steel pan at the rear of the diff cracks where there is a mounting bracket for the load valve link. The bad news if it is a cargo, is that you cant get the part anymore.

NielM Can I just ask you (sorry for hijacking post)
Where is the brake fluid level shown? I looked 'under the bonnet' when I had my problem and all fluids were ok. Im only asking as I was told by the mechanic that fixed it that theres both front and back fluid indicators??? (or something like that

You need to get a mechanic to look at his then - it could be either the prop seal, a crack in the diff casing or, as another poster has pointed out, brake fluid. Brake fluid has a distinctive bitter smell and "dry" feel to it - so worthwhile checking out before you drive it.

I'm afraid trucks are not really my area, I'm more of a car and motorbike (amateur) mechanic, it is just the principle is the same regardless of the size of machine.

Anyone else know where the brake reservoirs are usually found on a lorry?
