Morning...

Advice pls... Heard from my lorry mech they have a 2 horse lorry in for sale and I may pop in at the w/end and have a look.. Here are the details and I'd like advice from those with tech knowledge as I'm a bit of a 'girl'... Also guide on what you feel it would be worth - I know what they are asking for it.

Old V-Reg / 260kilometers / Mercedes 608D / 6.5 ton / 2 horse herringbone with dayliving / saddle and bridle racks / rear ramp / plate and tax till Apr 08.

2nd Question is a bit of a 'how much'....

My lorry is an ex-Army polo box, used to take 4 horses to and fro from Germany to UK for Officers / partitioned for 4 horses / 7.5 ton / no living but large luton area and jockey door / D-Reg / Ford Iveco / taxed and plated till Sept 07.

Thanks guys. I was going to buy a 4x4 and buy a trailer after selling hte lorry but just haven't had the right ones come by. this lorry sounds good to me, but i know very little.... It would be nice going to an event and having somewhere to get ready etc... I assume my box would be attractive to either polo or hunting yards.

by old V reg - what do you mean? 1970 something?

If so I would think it was worth about £2k and your lorry about £4k.

I hope its not that old.

I have just sold a 608D old A reg which has done 250km. It runs well and although not the fastest, has taken me from Essex to Devon in around 5 1/2 hours. It hasn't got power steering but I haven't really found that a huge problem. It took 2 very big horses - the woman who just bought it has a 18.2hh shire cross, and it has carried full shires before, and has a fairly basic living. I sold it for £2800 - I could perhaps have got a bit more, but the lady who bought it was in my yard and it saved advertising etc - and as long as I had enough for my trailer, i didn't really mind!!

Sounds very similar to this one, will ask about the power steering, and also about the weight. they call my lorry 7.5 ton which is what it will take when loaded, so i'm assuming 6.5 ton is the weight it will take with horse on it. I only have 1 horse.

I think mine is plated at 5.7 - I'd have to check to be certain! i worked out that I would be ok with 2 decent sized horses and associated tack etc - but you would not be able to do three. That is why I quite liked the lorry, it only took 2 so didn't have anyone asking me to 'just squeeze one more in'!

Not very good pics - you can just see the front behind the trailer, and the other shows where the horses go

I have to be honest, for its price it has been a very good lorry, it has been reliable, always starts, very economical fuelwise, passed its plating for the last four years apart from once, seems to have been easy to get the few parts that it has needed etc etc.

The only reason I sold it was because for the small amount of travelling I did, I couldn't justify having 2 vehicles on the road and I have a 4wd that I need to keep for other reasons.

Parts for old Mercedez are difficult to get and very expensive.

The suspension on Mercedez trucks has always been very soft and they roll on corners.
